The Laird Ring/Reid Ring

Reid RingThe ring was first presented by Mr. A.M. Laird at Commencement, 1949 and was originally named the Laird Ring.  The ring was named after Mr. Laird who came to GCVI in 1945 as a Vice-Principal.  He replaced Mr. J.E. Durrant who left GCVI to become a Provincial High School Inspector.

In 1968 the name of the ring changed to the Reid Ring and was named after Mr. P. G. Reid, who came to GCVI and taught in Guidance, was a Vice-Principal, and became Principal of GCVI in the school year 1955-56.  He replaced Mr. A.L. Fox who left to become Principal and open the new school, John F. Ross CVI.  Along with Mr. Fox, a number of staff members, and Vice Principal, Mr. Laird, also transferred to the new school.  Mr Reid continued as Principal at GCVI until he retired in 1971.

When the recipient, in their graduating year, is announced, it is a complete surprise to them and the audience.
