Hyland Heights News for June 2nd

Posted June 2, 2021

Good afternoon,

Thank you to our students who continue to work hard while remote learning and our families who continue to support them. We are incredibly proud of our students and our Hawks community.

On June 2, 2021, the provincial government announced that Ontario schools will remain in remote learning for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year. This means that all UGDSB students will continue learning remotely for the rest of this school year. Please note that school boards are required to follow the direction of the province.

We understand that while this news from the province may be a relief to some, it will be a source of stress and challenge to others. Our staff will continue to work with families to support students with their learning and wellness needs. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if your child requires support.

On June 11th we will have a Hawks spirit day. Please wear our school colours or spirit wear if you wish to participate.

June 7th is our last School Council meeting of the year at 6pm. Please contact our School Council on Facebook for the virtual meeting code. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

We’ve had a busy week at Hyland Heights. We wrapped up our National AccessAbility week with Patrick Anderson, a three- time gold medalist in wheelchair basketball. All week long we’ve been featuring a Paralympian in our daily announcements and encouraging our students and families to be active with our daily challenges. We hope everyone enjoyed our virtual assemblies and learned about AccessAbility and the Paralympics/ Olympics. Be sure to cheer on all of our Canadian athletes this summer in Tokyo. Finally, ask your child about their homework from Patrick.

June Is National Indigenous Peoples Month. Each day we are recognizing an Indigenous person whose passion and beliefs improve Canada’s culture and social wellness. We hope you have some time to watch our daily announcements with your child. But if not, please ask your child about them. So far we’ve talked about Murray Sinclair and Autumn Peltier. We’ve also learned more about what the word Indigernous means and heard an oral story about the first butterflies.

June is also Pride month. We are proud to be flying the Pride flag at Hyland Heights. Flying the Pride flag signals that our school is a safe space for everyone and that we support our 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

The UGDSB will offer a remote learning option for students in the 2021-22 school year. Students who register for remote school will be placed in the standalone remote school, where classes are staffed by dedicated remote learning teachers. Please see our website for information about the 2021-22 Elementary Remote School (ERS) and registration form. This will be your only opportunity to register for the 21/22 school year. Registration for the ERS is closed tomorrow, June 3rd at 4pm. No action is required if you want your child to attend in person.

We want to remind parents and guardians that students are marked absent if they are not participating in remote learning or completing paper packages. If your child is completing paper packages, please remember to send back the completed work at your next pick up, so teachers can assess work and provide feedback.  If children are not completing work online or through paper resources, it may lead to “i”s or insufficient on parts of the term two, June report card.

Please be aware that our primary playground (the metal structure that is painted yellow, red, and blue) is closed for repairs. Please do not use the structure. It should be repaired next week, and we will let our community know when it is repaired.

Please continue to check our school and board website for additional information.

A reminder that June 4th is a PD Day. Teachers will be continuing work on class placements for the 21/22 school year and working on assessment and evaluation for term two report cards as well. Thank you.
