Hyland Heights News for April 1st

Posted April 1, 2022

Good afternoon,

We had a great week at Hyland Heights.  Our students and staff looked great in their favourite sports team apparel today.   Our school spirit days continue into April:

Monday April 4- Shine Blue and Dress Red  for World Autism Day

Wednesday April 13- International Day of Pink

Wednesday April 20- Litter less Lunch Day

Friday April 22- World Earth Day, dress in colours of our Earth, blue, white, green, brown.

Friday April 29- Hawks Wear Day or school colours day

Hyland is a busy place. We have eco challenges happening at our school and Hyland Heights Reads is in full swing. Our theme this year is Mental Health.  Our GSA and Black Brilliance groups continue to meet. Please see our school Twitter account for more information and updates: @HylandHawks .

A reminder that our School Council meets at 6pm virtually on April the 4th. If you need the link, please contact the office. As the ground thaws and becomes muddy, please consider packing an extra pair of pants in your child’s school bag. Thank you.

We want to wish all of our students and families who celebrate Ramadan a month full of joy and happiness. Hyland Heights will now have multi-faith meditation and prayer space in our school. It will be located on the main level in our hub and will be labeled. We will accommodate student participation in learning and school events that may vary during Ramadan, assessments and cumulative tasks will be scheduled with Ramadan in mind, and a quiet indoor space is available for periods of physical activity and nutrition periods. School admin will be meeting with interested students to explain more on Monday. If you would like accommodations made for your child who is fasting, please give Mrs. Papavasiliou a call.

The Ministry provides  COVID-19 guidance, the best and most current information is embedded within the screening tool. The tool also accounts for individuals who tested positive in the last 90 days, who have traveled etc. COVID 19 School Screening

Highlights to current changes:

Masking is now no longer required, but encouraged by the UGDSB. There are exceptions  for a few specific circumstances. Please ensure that your child wears a mask if they fall into the following groups:

  • For 6-10 days after a self-isolation period of five days after having COVID-19
  • If you are identified as a close contact of someone with COVID-19
  • In public spaces, including schools and child cares, for the first 14 days

While masking continues to be strongly encouraged for indoor spaces, it will now be a personal, family, decision and we will work to ensure that all students, staff, and parents/guardians  respect the decisions of others to either wear a mask or to go without one.

Please continue to use the COVID Screening tool daily before your child attends school https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/ . It will continue to be important for students with illness of any kind to remain home while they have symptoms.

Have a great weekend.
