Posted May 13, 2022

Good afternoon Hawk Families,

It’s been another great  week at Hyland Heights. Our students and staff looked great in Hyland colours and/or spirit wear and blue and white for another Leafs spirit day. Our school spirit days continue into May:

Tuesday May 17- International Day Against Homophobia, transphobia and Biphobia, wear rainbow colours

Friday May 27- Beach wear day- shorts, sundresses, flip flops, sunhats- think summer!

Reminder about Dogs on School Property:

During school hours, we kindly ask that you do not bring your dog onto school property. We have a number of children who are scared of dogs, no matter the size. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Asian Heritage Month

The Month of May is Asian Heritage Month, and the national 2022 theme is, “Continuing a legacy of greatness.” Although Asian Heritage Month has been celebrated since the 90s, in 2002 the government of Canada made it official. This month is an opportunity to not only recommit to fighting against AntiAsian hate but also to celebrate the great contributions and diversity of Asian-Canadians over the last 200 years.  Staff and students have shared their learning through a few displays at our school.

Jewish Heritage Month

The Month of May is Jewish Heritage Month and was officially recognized federally in 2018 after a unanimous House of Commons vote. The Jewish community has played and continues to play an important role in shaping the society we have today. In 1947, the Jewish Labour Committee lobbied and successfully passed the first anti-discrimination resolution at the Canadian Congress of Labour demanding equality for all regardless of religion, race or nationality. This month is an opportunity to declare our commitment to fighting Antisemitism and to recognize the great contributions of Jewish-Canadians. We welcome families who may be interested in creating a display in our school, to please contact Mrs. PapaV.

Grade 6/7/8 Summer Learning Opportunity:

Upper Grand DSB offers Grade 6, 7, and 8 students requiring additional support with the Ontario curriculum, particularly in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy, an opportunity to participate in an 8-day non-credit remediation program.

The program is intended for students whose achievement of expectations in Grade 6, 7or 8 Language and/or Mathematics indicates that they are likely to experience difficulty in the next school year. Students who are achieving a Level 2 or below in Language and/or Mathematics at their grade level, and are recommended by their Principal, are eligible to participate in the program. Parents of Grade 6, 7, and 8 can contact their home school to indicate their interest in the program. Please contact your child’s teacher first to see if they will be a good fit and then Mrs. Papavasiliou will call you to register your child.

These support programs are half-day in length so it is possible for students to participate in both the literacy and the numeracy support program. Session Dates: Tuesday, July 5th – Thursday, July 14th, 2022. Literacy and Numeracy support programs are being offered at John F Ross CVI (Guelph) or Grant Evans Education Centre (Orangeville). All programs are dependent on sufficient enrolment. Transportation is not provided.

COVID Screening Tool & Mask Guidance:

The Ministry provides  COVID-19 guidance; the best and most current information is embedded within the screening tool. The tool also accounts for individuals who tested positive in the last 90 days, who have traveled etc. COVID 19 School Screening

Highlights to current changes:

Please continue to use the COVID Screening tool daily before your child attends school https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/ . It will continue to be important for students with illness of any kind to remain home while they have symptoms.
