ILPS June 2019 School Newsletter

Posted June 10, 2019

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We wish all of our families a restful summer and we wish our grade 8’s all the best for the future in high school!  We would like to say a very special thank you to all of our Teachers, ECE’s, EA’s, Office Staff, CYC and Custodial staff who have made this year possible!!  We welcome Mrs. Robertson as our new Vice-Principal in September as Mrs. Dampier is off to celebrate her retirement from education.   We have been lucky to have Mrs. Dampier here at Island Lake for the past 5 years.  Her quiet leadership and Special Education expertise has been very valuable.  Mrs. Robertson comes to us from Brisbane PS where she was Vice-Principal.  We welcome her to the Island and are looking forward to learning and working with her.

As we come to the end of our school year, we would also like to express our  gratitude to the  School Council and other volunteers who have supported our school.   We have achieved a lot together and we are looking forward to 2019-20!  We say a special goodbye to our School Council co-chair, Kim Soper, who has previously been our Chair.  Kim has contributed many, many hours to making Island Lake a special place for our community.  Amongst the many accomplishments that Kim has been a part of, our Outdoor Learning Space stands out as testament to her perseverance and vision.  Thank you for all you have done for the Island, Kim!

Mrs. Dampier and I would like to share with our parents, guardians, staff and students what a pleasure it has been for us to work for all of you this year.    We wish everyone a safe and happy summer and look forward to seeing you in September.

Mr. Sean Singh (x223)      Mrs. Janice Dampier (x224)

Principal                               Vice-Principal

From Island to Island – Water is Life

Our mural in the front foyer inspired by the Seven Grandfather Teachings has been completed.  We will be putting the final touches on over the next couple of weeks, including adding the title (above).  Please come by and see the mural for yourself – we are very proud of the work of our Ospreys!!!

Fifty Grade 6,7 and 8 Ospreys were involved in painting the mural under the direction of Indigenous artist Michael Cywink.

The Ontario Arts Council has funded the project, and Jennifer Bailey, Grade 7 teacher has been the lead teacher responsible for bringing Michael to Island Lake PS.

Two other schools in the Orangeville area are home to Michael’s murals. Both Montgomery Village and Erin PS have had teachings passed down through Michael, an Odawa Anishinabe of the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory on Manitoulin Island.

ILPS Community Garden Makeover

We would like to thank Mrs. Hughson for her leadership, dedication and commitment to the ILPS Environmental Initiatives that she is involved in.  From the Waste Audit to the Gr. 5 Guardians of the Garden, to earning another Gold Ecoschools Rating, we would like to take a moment to appreciate all that she does.  We would also like to thank Mr. Broderick for his efforts to make environmental awareness part of our everyday thinking and action.  His focus on creating opportunities for student success is very much appreciated.

Thanks to Orangeville Building Supply for their generous donation and great price on the lumber for the new eco garden raised beds. Thank you to students from Ms Manzerole and Ms Miller’s classes for their hard work with the shovels. A very special thanks to Mr Broderick’s grade 4/5 class for all the hard work put into making the garden look nice again.

Thanks to Learning For a Sustainable Future and Green Up Your School Grounds for the grant money that covered the cost of soil and lumber.

Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader!!

It’s been a busy month in the Library Learning Commons at ILPS!

Forest of Reading

We officially finished off the Forest of Reading book clubs for the year (Blue Spruce for Kindergarten to grade 2 students, and Silver Birch and Red Maple for older students) and celebrated our voting day with class parties (KG to grade 2) and a trip to the Festival of Trees (grades 3 to 8). Students really enjoyed all the books this year and enjoyed comparing their voting choices to those of students across Ontario on our bulletin board outside the LLC. A huge thank you goes out to the Parent Council for purchasing the club books again for our students this year!

Upcoming Author Visit

On Friday, June 21st, we will be hosting a visit from award-winning Canadian author, Philip Roy. He will be speaking to students about his popular “Happy the Pocket Mouse” book series (grade KG to 2 presentation only) and his books for older students including “Me and Mr. Bell” and his “Submarine Outlaw” series. If you would like to order a copy of one of Philip’s books for your child to be autographed during his visit, please see the attached page for order details and instructions. Kids will receive their books during Philip’s visit.

Circulation

Friday, May 31st was the last day of this school year for students to check out books from the LLC. All books should be returned by Monday, June 10th.  Kids in JK to grade 1 should also return their book bags for cleaning over the summer. The first few classes to get all their books (and bags) back will win a small prize!

Volunteers

A special thank you goes out to all the students and parent volunteers who worked as LLC helpers this year! It’s been your dedication, helpfulness and organizational skills that have allowed the LLC to be open during the day for all students to drop-in for a quiet space to work or to get a book to read. I couldn’t do it without you – thank you! Ms. Fraser
