ILPS Feb 2020 – School Newsletter

Posted February 10, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Please take a moment to read the newsletter below – there is important information about Island Lake PS, its staff and its students.  Despite the trying times, there are wonderful things happening at your school!!!

Labour Updates———————————————————————–

Please check the board Labour Relations Page at https://www.ugdsb.ca/board/labour-relations/  for updates.  As of Jan 13, 2020, the ETFO will be moving into Phase 3 of work to rule job action.  As a result, previously scheduled field trips will have to be cancelled.  Please look for letters coming home detailing the cancellations.  Parents and Guardians can also check our calendar on the school website to view any cancellations.

Black History Month————————————————————

A celebration of Black History
Every year Canadians are invited to take part in the festivities and events that honour the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present.  This celebration exists to recognize the rich contributions within our society from people of African and Caribbean descent, and of their ongoing struggle for equity and social justice.
This is a time to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate and prosperous nation we know today. It is also an opportunity for all Canadians to learn about the experiences of Black Canadians in our society, and the vital role this community has played throughout our shared history.
We are pleased to have one of our parents presenting to our students at the end of February.  Shandor Alphonso, NHL referee, will be sharing his story with our students at an assembly.  We thank him for his time and are looking forward to his presentation.

ILPS School Council Danceathon 2020 ————————————-

ILPS Council’s annual Dance-a-thon fundraiser is taking place on Friday February 14, 2020. This year, we are asking students to wear white clothing on dance day, so everyone glows under the black lights.
What is the Money Raised Used for?
This event ensures every student in every class at Island Lake Public School benefits from the Scientists in Schools program. Scientists in School was founded on the principle that students learn best when they get to be the scientists – doing science instead of just reading or hearing about science. The name Scientists in School does not refer to the science experts brought into your child’s classroom, rather, it refers to the students themselves. During Scientists in School workshops, your children become scientists in school. To learn more about Scientists in School, visit their website at https://www.scientistsinschool.ca/
How Does it Work?
Students are each given a pledge collection envelope to seek donations from family and family friends. Watch for the envelope to come home this week. This envelope, including the money collected, is to be returned to the school no later than February 14th. It’s as easy as that!
This event is a fundraising competition! Our Goal is to raise $4000.00.
What are the Prizes?
– The class with the top donations collected in each division (Primary, Junior and Intermediate) will win a Pizza Party
– The individual student with the top donations in each division will win a $25 gift card of their choosing
– The student with the overall top donations will be Principal for half a day and enjoy lunch with Mr. Singh and Ms. Lightfoot.

No Home-baked Goods are allowed at school—————————

This is an important reminder for all parents/guardians that we are NOT allowed to bring in home baked goods (cupcakes, cakes etc) for special occasions.  With Valentine’s day coming up, it is a good time to remind everyone of our policy.  This is because home baked goods can be subject to cross contamination of known allergens.  Earlier this year, we had a student experience an anaphylactic response after eating a home-baked cake brought in to the school as part of a celebration.

Items purchased from a grocery store with labels indicating they are peanut free etc. are options for parents/guardians.

In addition, students with allergies should be encouraged by parents and guardians to refrain from partaking in the consumption of food/drink that is brought from home without their parent’s consent.  Lunch should not be shared between students.

Grandpals  – Grade 8 ———————————————————–

GrandPals needed for Grade 8!

We’re looking for seniors who’d be interested in participating in a GrandPals program with the grade 8 students.  The purpose of this intergenerational program is to foster cooperation, understanding and friendship between the generations. The program impacts the youth’s attitudes towards aging and understanding the past.  It also promotes feelings of life-satisfaction and self-worth for the older adult.

*Please contact Stacey Manzerolle ([email protected]) or Mardell Miller ([email protected]) if you know any seniors who might be interested in this amazing program.*

Challenge Course 2020————————————————————

CHALLENGE COURSE AT ILPS   Feb 24-28

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Escarpment Outdoor Adventures is coming back to Island Lake to turn our Gym into a CHALLENGE COURSE for all of our students from JK to Gr 8.  This year, our School Council has paid for half the cost of the program for our students.  This reduces the cost to participate in the program to $7 per student.   Information and forms will be coming home later this month.  This opportunity will allow students to participate in the activities during their Gym periods for the week of Feb 24-28.

Teachers of Phys Ed will accompany their classes into the gym at their normal gym time.  In addition to the EOA staff, there will be some older student helpers available to help with harnesses etc.

Escarpment Outdoor Adventures has been safely providing programs for the past twenty years to schools across Ontario.  Challenge activities are being used across the province as an educational tool to promote healthy active living and to help students develop teamwork skills, mental focus and group dynamics. These activities find a venue for non-traditional athletes to excel, and for all participants to set and achieve personal goals.

We thank the School Council for supporting this program and helping to provide this opportunity for all students K-8.
