June 2020 End of Year Updates – ILPS

Posted June 25, 2020

1)MESSAGES FROM THE OFFICE

Mr. Singh’s message:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As the school year ends, we would like to say thank you for your support and for your flexibility as we dealt with the impacts of Covid-19.  Your help with implementing distance learning and moving school “online” was instrumental.  The new learning and the work the staff did to be able to provide educational opportunities for our students was incredible.

I heard a term used somewhere on the Internet that aptly described what we had to do,” we were rebuilding the plane while flying it”.  Thanks to the efforts of our Island Lake Community – the parents, the students and the staff, we managed to keep that plane in the air.

We are waiting to see what September will look like for schools.  Over the next two months, the Board team is creating the 3 plans the Minister of Education has talked about.  We will pass on more information as it becomes available.  In the meantime, continue to follow Social Distance protocols, take care of yourself and your families and try to find the “silver lining” in situations.  There is usually a hidden benefit or something positive that we can find to make ourselves happy and healthy, no matter what is thrown at us.

Mrs. Robertson’s message:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Just a quick message to say thank you to all the support from our parent community with the distance learning. We know it wasn’t easy but appreciate the ways you supported your children and helped them to continue their learning at home. I am looking forward to meeting/seeing our community in the fall. Have a great summer and enjoy your family time. We’ll see you in September.

Mrs. Lightfoot’s message:  (Congratulations on your new VP position at Kortright Public School in Guelph)

It has been a pleasure to work with your children this year both in the classroom, on the yard or in the office. I’ve been impressed by their ability to take responsibility for their actions and problem solve through challenging issues.  This is a testament to you and all that you do to support them.  Thank you! Working with the Island Lake Community has been a wonderful experience!

2)REPORT CARDS

All reports have been mailed out to your home address on file.  Please look out for a white envelope from Island Lake coming soon to a mailbox near you!  Reports do NOT have to be signed and returned to the school.

3) CHROMEBOOKS

Thank you to all of our parents and guardians who have helped support student distance learning during our closure period.  We hope the use of the borrowed Chromebook has been helpful.    We have had many requests from families wondering if they can keep the Chromebook over the summer to continue to support learning and help children stay engaged in their learning.

The answer is YES!

Feel free to keep the Chromebook you have for return to our school in September.    For those moving to a new Upper Grand DSB school you may continue to use the same device you currently have and return to our school in the fall.    If you choose to keep the Chromebook over the summer please remember to fully shut it down regularly to ensure it access updates over the summer when it is turned back on.

Thanks again for your continued support and best wishes for a healthy and safe summer!

4) SEPTEMBER 2020

Please continue to check the Board website https://www.ugdsb.ca/for up-to-date information about September 2020 Start-Up.

Have a safe and healthy summer.
