Updates for Sept 7 return to school – Change to Public Health Protocol re: recess

Posted September 5, 2021

Good morning Island Lake parents and guardians,

We are excited to see our students return to school on Tuesday, Sept 7 (new JK students on Thursday, Sept 9).

In preparation for our return please review the following information:

Public Health Change to Recess protocol:

  • NEW- Students may be unmasked outside, but will remain in their class cohorts at recess.  The previous message from Public Health said classes could mingle.  This is no longer the case.  All classes will remain in separate cohorts inside and outside of the school.  Students will continue to be masked inside the school.

Teacher contact with families:

  • All teacher have sent emails or called each family of the students in their class.  If you have not received an email or phone call, please check your junk mail.  In the event that you cannot find an email, not to worry – please see one of our staff outside on Tuesday morning and they can direct you to one of our Admin or Special Education Resource Teachers who have class lists.

School reorganization:

  • School reorganization, prompted by Ministry-mandated caps on primary class sizes and more than expected late-August registrations, is likely.  Student placements in all classes are tentative during the first two weeks of school.  To meet Ministry guidelines pertaining to fixed class sizes, all schools in the Board will be reviewed by a central committee and decisions regarding specific class sizes will be made. Please be prepared for changes to be made to your child’s placement.  Staff will meet to discuss placement based on academic needs.   Please note that due to the very tight timelines around reorganization, we are not able to take parent requests for placement.

Parking:

  • As we have more staff at Island Lake than parking spots in the lot, the Board has designated our parking lot for staff and accessible parking only. We ask visitors to use the 15 min parking in the front of the school or the side streets (watch the signs) when visiting our school.
  •  When parking on the side streets, please do not block or park in the driveways of residents.  Cars may be ticketed by parking control.  Residents require free access in and out of their homes at all times.
  •  We ask our community to continue to be as caring and considerate as they have been in the past.  We had a very smooth year last year with regards to parking, pick-up and drop-off.
  • Thank you to parents and guardians for their cooperation.

Lunchroom Supervisors:

  • We are still looking for lunchroom supervisors –  please contact Ms. Robertson, our VP for details on the position.

Have a wonderful last day of summer tomorrow!!  We are excited to see our families back in the building on Tuesday morning!!!

Sincerely,

Sean Singh
