Back To School Information

Posted September 1, 2022

On behalf of the Island Lake staff, we’d like to welcome you to the 2022/23 school year. We hope you have had an enjoyable summer and look forward to seeing our students return on September 6th. Make sure to visit the Upper Grand Website www.ugdsb.ca/2022 for school start-up information. Below is information regarding our first dayBack 2 School procedures and other information to help the transition back to school a successful one.

*Please note school times have changed

8:35am – Supervision on the yard begins

8:50am – School start time

10:30 – 11:10am – 1st Nutrition Break and Recess

12:50 – 1:30pm – 2nd Nutrition Break and Recess

3:10pm – Dismissal

First Day Procedures:

  • Staff will be reaching out via email to give information/instructions on where to line up on the yard. This will vary depending on grade.  There will be signs placed on the yard in the morning and staff will be ready to assist if needed.
  • In the case of inclement weather:
    • JK/SK will enter the kindergarten classrooms through the kindergarten yard
    • Grade 1-3 students will meet and line up in the gym
    • Grade 4 students will go to the portables.  Staff on duty will help guide them to their classrooms
    • Grade 5 will enter the ecopac
    • Grade 6-8 will head to the upper level of the school
  • If you are driving your child to the school, please do not enter the school lot during the times posted on the sign at the entrance to the parking lot as buses will need access.

Hand Hygiene, Masking, & Screening Tool:

  • We will continue to practice good hand washing routines and use of hand sanitizer
  • Masking is encouraged but not required
  • The Ministry of Health and the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health have provided a new “School and Child Care” screening tool.   It is recommended that students/children and visitors continue to self-screen for illness every day before attending school or child care using this updated August 31st Version 5.0 Screening Tool:  School and Child Care Screening Tool.  Students/children and visitors who do not pass the screening should follow the advice provided upon completion of the screening tool.
  • Downloadable versions of the tool continue to be available for anyone who may require a paper copy.

Friendly Reminders:

  • If your contact information has changed over the summer, please inform the office (especially email as we use this to send out ongoing communication).
  • Safe Schools Arrival: when your child is absent and/or late, please call the office so they are accounted for.  This will also help decrease the number of calls the office will need to make each morning.
  • If your child has a plan of care in place or will need a plan of care for this school year, complete and return the necessary forms to the office.
  • Some of our students have life-threatening allergies so we ask that you check with our staff and/or the sign on the entrance to the school so that you are aware.  As always, our school is a nut free zone.
  • If your child rides a bus to and from school, make sure to check the transportation website https://stwdsts.ca/ for information regarding pick up and drop of times.  This can change so make sure to check the night before school starts.
  • Student Accident Insurance info will be sent home the first week of school.  Information can also be found on our school website.

Continue to check our school website/calendar for information/upcoming events at Island Lake P.S. https://www.ugdsb.ca/islandlake/ and/or follow us on Twitter @IslandLakePS

Sincerely,

Kaye Martin (Principal) & Shan Robertson (Vice-Principal)
