Information for students/parents about temporary remote learning starting Jan. 4, 2021

As communicated last week, the provincial government has directed schools in Ontario to move temporarily to remote learning following the winter break.

All UGDSB elementary and secondary students will begin the new year working remotely, with the exception of DD classes (please see below for further details).

UGDSB elementary schools will participate in remote learning from Jan. 4-8 and will resume in-person learning on Jan. 11. UGDSB secondary schools will participate in remote learning from Jan. 4-22 and will resume in-person learning on Jan. 25.

ELEMENTARY INFORMATION

  • During the week of Dec. 28, schools will determine the technology needs of their students. Schools will communicate with families directly about device pick-up.
  • Schools will continue to support students who are unable to access technology or reliable internet.
  • Teachers will post their regular weekly schedule in their Google Classroom.
  • On Jan. 4, elementary students will have access to asynchronous work posted in their Google Classroom and teachers will check in with all of their students.
  • From Jan. 5-8, teachers will provide daily instruction with a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning activities.

SECONDARY INFORMATION

  • Remote learning will begin for secondary students at 1pm on Jan. 4, 2021. Teachers will connect with students in the morning to ensure they are prepared for remote learning and to answer questions.
  • Course content is available to students in either the Google platform or Brightspace.
  • Students/parents will be provided with a daily schedule or timetable that includes 300 minutes of learning opportunities, with a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning activities.
  • Teachers will work with their entire class each day during this temporary remote learning period.
  • Schools will continue to support students who are unable to access technology or reliable internet.

STUDENTS IN SPECIALIZED CLASS PLACEMENTS (ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY)

The UGDSB will continue in-person instruction in specialized classes for students with developmental disabilities (DD Classes) for the duration of the remote learning period. Students who attend DD classes will continue to have transportation to and from school and will receive daily in-person instruction in schools. DD classes will begin at the normal time on Monday Jan. 4.

CHILD CARE AND BEFORE/AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS

During the week of Jan. 4-8, all Child Care Centres (ages 0-3.8) connected to UGDSB elementary schools will remain open. Before and After School Programs will not be operating during this week.

The Ministry of Education has implemented targeted Emergency Child Care (ECC) for School-Aged Children at no cost to eligible parents. KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

Junior Kindergarten registration will begin on January 5 as planned. There will be no in-person registration or verification of documents permitted the week of Jan. 4-8, 2021. For additional details about kindergarten registration, please visit https://www.ugdsb.ca/kindergarten/registration/.

SECONDARY INTENT TO CHANGE SURVEY

The Secondary Intent to Change Learning Modes Survey will continue to be open from Jan. 4-11, 2021. This is the final opportunity for secondary students to change between in-person and remote learning, and the change will be effective for the start of Semester 2 (February 2021).
