Big Brothers Big Sisters

Dear Parents/Guardians,

J.D. Hogarth is working with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington to build better awareness of their In School Mentoring Programs and better serve the students of our school.

Big Brothers Big Sisters believes every child would benefit from a mentor.  Mentoring provides children with another safe adult in their life to spend quality time with building a trusting friendship. Mentors help children increase their self-esteem, self-awareness and self-confidence.

Studies show that children who have a one-to-one mentor have an advocate to encourage a positive attitude toward school and learning, often show academic improvement and attend school more consistently. Children also develop stronger social skills and build trust through another friendship.

Mentoring provides support through a program that matches an elementary student with an adult Mentor. They meet once per week for one hour on school property.

Mentors are adult volunteers who are recruited, screened and trained by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington.  All volunteer Mentors are extensively screened prior to being matched with a student.  Matching is based on similar interests and lasts for the entire school year. Some Matches continue from year-to-year.
