Tips for Parents with Children Learning On- Line:

Charge (plug in) technology the night before.

Designate space for learning if possible, set up at a table with a spot for each child and their device. Remove things that can be distracting, (favourite toys or turn off the TV).

Use a headphone with a mic if available.

Remind your child to mute their mic when learning.

Set alarms and routines. Start with a morning routine. At school, your child listens to bells and follows schedules everyday. Help them by setting them up for success by creating a home/outside/work/class schedule (have an older sibling set this up if possible as they are very familiar with on-line schedules). When does the day begin/end? When will we eat? When will we play (recess)? Setting schedules and routines helps children know what is coming up and when it will end, this brings them comfort. If your child is younger, let them know what they will be doing for the next hour, older students can schedule their whole day.

Lunch and Recess, both play a vital role in your child’s school life. Let them know when it is their turn to play and consolidate their learning.

Balance is essential to good physical and mental health. Walk together, make sure you drink water, go outside, have a snack, eat lunch together if possible, play a game, know when work is getting to be too much and cause stress for your child. Setting limits for your child is good for your child.

Bathroom, if we are drinking and eating right we need to make sure we let children know that they can go when they need to as part of a healthy day. These are highly scheduled at school, especially with Covid protocols.

If your child is late for a lesson on-line, just let the teacher know by writing in the chat feature. Email the teacher if you are having tech issues.

Remember that on-line learning is a classroom learning environment for students.. Code of Conduct still applies to on-line learning for all community members. Be respectful of others and privacy.

Lessons and learning, students will be on-line for a large part of the day. It is important that we let them know they can get up and stretch, move their shoulders or whatever they need to do so they don’t get sore while learning on-line.

On-line learning can come with challenges, let’s work together to demonstrate to our children that we can overcome these challenges, be flexible and learn together the best we can.
