What you need to know to register your child for school

Posted August 12, 2019

The 2019-2020 school year begins on September 3, which means it is almost time to register your child if you are new to the Upper Grand District School Board.

If your child is a returning student to the UGDSB, you do not need to register them unless you have moved to a different school.

Elementary Regular Track

Elementary Registration Day is taking place at all UGDSB elementary schools on August 28 between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. If you are unable to attend on August 28, parents and guardians may register their child for elementary school after August 28 from Monday to Friday during regular school hours (stat holidays excluded).

Please register at your local school. To determine which school your child is eligible to attend, visit the UGDSB’s School Locator. Visit www.findmyschool.ca to determine transportation eligibility for any residential address in the district.

Parents and guardians are asked to bring the following documents to registration:

  1. Proof of Age (e.g. child’s birth certificate, Birth Registration From, Baptismal Certificate, Canadian Citizenship/Permanent Resident Card, Passport, custodial documents [if applicable])
  2. Immunization Record (Please submit directly to Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health)
  3. Proof of Address (e.g. utility/tax bill, bank statement, purchase/lease agreement – A driver’s licence is not accepted.)
  4. Verification of date or arrival/immigration documents (if child was not born in Canada)

For more information on elementary registration, please visit www.ugdsb.ca/registration.

Please note: All NEW junior and senior kindergarten registrations are required to pre-register online prior to registering at your home school. Students in grades 1 to 8 do not need to pre-register online. Kindergarten pre-registration can be completed using the UGDSB Pre-Registration Online Form.

For more information about pre-registering, a helpful video demonstrating how to pre-register has been prepared:

Elementary French Immersion

Please note that each UGDSB elementary school that offers French Immersion (FI) has a Junior Kindergarten (JK) enrolment cap. JK is the only entry point for FI in the Upper Grand DSB. Entry into FI from other jurisdictions is possible if your child has previous FI experience. Check with your local FI school for more information about program space and waiting lists.

Students not admitted into the FI program or placed on a waitlist must register for JK at their home Regular Track school.

To learn more about the FI cap, entry point and random selection process, visit the board website.

Transportation

Your child may be eligible for school transportation. For information on transportation eligibility, please visit www.findmyschool.ca. Service de Transport de Wellington-Dufferin Student Transportation Services (STWDSTS) is open during the summer and may be contacted at 519-824-4119 or 1-888-292-2224.

Those who are eligible for transportation can choose to opt out of busing by contacting the STWDSTS office.  Your child will be removed from the bus list and marked as not riding.  However, if you require busing in the future, you can call to re-assign your child to the bus at any time.

For more information about admission and registration in the UGDSB, please visit the board website.
