EJPS Week at a Glance (Sep 19-23)

Chers parents,

We just finished our first eight days of school and your child’s learning journey is off to a great start. Thank you for all you do in supporting their learning and working in partnership with your child’s teacher. If you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact them directly. The tempo of school life is picking up speed as many activities and events are already occurring or being planned.

Below are a few information items and reminders.

  • As previously announced by Premier Doug Ford, Ontario will mark September 19, 2022, as a provincial Day of Mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Schools across the province are being asked to recognize a minute of silence in honour of her legacy.  As such,EJPS staff and students will  observe a solemn minute of silence at 12:30pm on Monday, September 19th.
  • The UGDSB Counts Student Census launches on September 19, 2022, for all students in the UGDSB, K-12. To learn more visit https://www.ugdsb.ca/board/ugdsb-counts-student-census-2022/. The optional student survey can done at home with parent support.
  • As you have read in my previous email messages, classroom organizations are temporary until they are approved by the District Staffing Committee, using our updated enrolment numbers. This week, in order to comply with Ministry class size requirements, the Upper Grand District School Board’s District Staffing Committee assigned École Edward Johnson a slightly new school organization to even out our class sizes in the primary grades and adhere to cap sizes.  These changes impacted just four students who had to move out of  the following classes: Gr 1A, Gr 1\2C, Gr 3\4B. We thoughtfully chose the students to move and then informed their parents so they could speak to their children prior to being moved. Following this, we facilitated some classroom visits later in the week to ensure a positive transition. The four students will start in their new classes officially on September 19th. We appreciate the understanding and support of those brave students and their families!
  • Our school will be participating in the Terry Fox Walk again this year on Friday September 23rd during the middle block.   In the event of inclement weather, our rain date will be Monday September 26th. We will be completing our walk throughout the neighbourhood community.  We would like to encourage all students to help raise funds for this worthy cause.  Last year we raised an amazing $2325.50!  This year, our school goal is $2,500.  “Toonies for Terry” on the day of the walk are always gratefully accepted, however, please consider donating via our secure school fundraising website: https://schools.terryfox.ca/EdwardJohnsonPSGuelph Please ensure that your child has comfortable walking shoes and is dressed for the weather on our walk date. We are encouraging students to wear RED, in honour of Terry Fox as a Canadian hero.
  • Our first School Council meeting will be held in-person in the school library next Tuesday, September 20th starting at 6:30 PM.. In the meantime, please fill out this survey to let Council know about your preferred methods of communication and other helpful information. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HTFCTWV
  • Open House/Meet the Teacher/EJPS Fall Fair on Sept 29 (More details to follow)
  • National Day for Truth & Reconciliation/Orange Shirt Day on Sept 30. We have ordered optional “Every Child Matters” buttons for every student and staff member as it can be difficult to find an orange shirt for this important day.
  • Information about Food Programs will be coming soon.
  • This is a reminder that there are cameras around the exterior and throughout the school hallways which act as deterrents to those thinking about damaging our school property as well as evidence in case we need to investigate any issues. You will notice there are stickers on our school doors indicating that there is video surveillance.

Thank you for another excellent week. Enjoy the wonderful warm weather this weekend!

Olivier Cutz (Principal)
