Spread kindness – No Name-Calling week is January 20 to 24

Posted January 20, 2020

No Name-Calling Week is January 20 – 24 this year. The week is organized by educators and students with the goal of ending name-calling and bullying in schools.

This initiative was founded in 2004 and was inspired by James Howe’s novel The Misfits. This book is about students who, after experiencing name-calling, run for student council on a No Name-Calling platform.

The week is rooted in the idea of #KindnessInAction by recognizing the importance of kindness, while actively adding kindness in to everyday actions.

During No Name-Calling Week, let’s end slurs and stereotypes and continue to spread kindness in our hallways and communities.

Here is a list of some of the activities that you can do during the week:

  • As a class or family, discuss the types of harmful language you hear in your school or community. How can we learn from hearing this language?
  • If you catch yourself using harmful language, track it — by the end of the week did you notice if your harmful language use noticeably decreased?
  • Identify ways that words can be used to hurt others and discuss them as a class
  • Create word banks of hurtful and helpful words as a class or family, discuss why these words were put in each column
  • As a class, think about activities that you can do to move beyond no name-calling week and to help reinforce kindness.

Let us know how you spread kindness during No Name-Calling Week, by tweeting @ugdsb using #UGKindness and #NoNameCallingWeek.
