SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES

MARYBOROUGH PUBLIC SCHOOL

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 24th, 2020 @ 7:00 pm

Present: Jennifer Bailey, Nicole Culling, Tim Dickieson (Principal), Shannon Frook, Jennifer Gray, Heather Griffin, Kerin Harwood (Staff Rep), Lori Klopper, Amanda Stege, and Ainslea Thompson

Regrets: Barb Driscoll, Kayla McGuire

School Council Elections:

  • The elections took place for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year
    • Chair: Shannon Frook
    • Secretary: Amanda Stege
    • Treasurer: Ainslea Thomson

Principal’s Report:

School Organization:

  • At present time, we have 188 students registered at Maryborough PS. Of our 188 students, 9 are participating in remote learning and 179 are in-school.

Staff Updates:

  • We would like to welcome Sheena Bingelman and Megan Timmerman, who have joined our EA Team
  • We would also like to welcome Desiree Frenette, who has joined our school as a 0.1 CYC (she will be coming to MPS two Fridays every month)
  • As a result of staffing changes, we have lost an ECE position in KB; so at this time we are wishing all the best to Trish Kieswetter as she starts a new position at Edward Johnson in Guelph on Monday

Reopening of Schools:

  • Our staff has worked very hard to set-up safe classrooms and to establish routines to keep everyone safe
    • Some of the routines we have considered include: entry and exit procedures, eating time and recess procedures, washroom breaks, and providing outdoor learning opportunities
  • Remember, parents need to complete the COVID-19 screening daily with each child
  • For more information about how we will manage COVID-19 symptoms at school, please see the following POST on our school website

Upcoming Information/Events:

  • Our Open House will take place virtually this year
    • Next week, more information will be shared about how to access the virtual visit for each classroom
  • Orange Shirt Day is on September 30th
    • Orange Shirt day started in 2013; and it was designated to educate and promote awareness about the Residential School System and the impact this system had on the Indigenous Communities of Canada for more than a century
  • Rowan’s Law Day is also on September 30th
    • This is the day designated for concussion awareness; students are invited to wear purple on this day
  • Our MPS Terry Fox Run will take place on October 2nd

  • At this time, schools in UGDSB are not accepting money, nor are they participating in fundraising; please see the following POST on our school website for more information
  • At this time as well, we are not able to offer milk, pizza, or hot lunches
  • Mr. Dickieson also offered a BIG thank you to the parents and guardians of the Maryborough PS community for their support and understanding during the return to school. It has been great to see the smiling faces of our students during the return to school!

Treasurer’s Report:

  • Ainslea shared the Treasurer’s Report
    • SC-Fundraising – $3 574.68
    • SC-General – $10 000.00
    • SC-Hot Lunches – $2 500.00
    • SC-Playground – $15 000.00
    • SC-Playground Maintenance – $5 000.00

Fundraising Report:

  • No new items to report at this time
  • Will reconvene if the opportunity to fundraise becomes available

Meeting Dates for 2020-2021:

  • Thursday, September 24th, 2020
  • Thursday, November 12th, 2020
  • Thursday, January 21st, 2021
  • Thursday, April 22, 2021
  • Additional meetings could be scheduled if opportunities for fundraising or hot lunches are adjusted
