GUELPH, Ontario – We’ve almost completed our first year of exploring a different Umbrella Skill each month. This June, we will be looking at Mastery as our final Umbrella Skill for the 2020-2021 school year.

We know that this has been a challenging year, we have all collectively had to manage an ever-changing landscape. Pressures on families, students and staff have been significant as we work our way through this global pandemic. As a board, we focused on wellness skills throughout the year, and it seemed appropriate that our last month be the theme of mastery.

Mastery is the act of working toward being proficient at something. Achieving mastery means having the drive, the self-discipline, and a comprehensive knowledge on the process of learning every day so that you can excel at something you care about.

This month, look back at the skills we have studied this year: empathy, mindfulness, gratitude, self-compassion, healthy lifestyle, autonomy and intrinsic motivation. How have you explored these skills? What, if anything, have you been able to add into your routine? If nothing, that is okay. Just the act of learning about new skills is the beginning of building.

Thank you to those who have explored the Umbrella Skills with us this year, we look forward to exploring more Umbrella Skills as a board and community when we start our 2021-2022 school year.

Let us know what you’ve learned this year as we explored each Umbrella Skill by using #UGUmbrella.
