Principal’s Message – January 18, 2020
One of the strengths of our school is connections. I am always touched when I see students in our older grades working with students in younger grades. Some individuals have been asked to be leaders and read with younger students, play math games or just hang out. Never, when their teacher has asked them to share their skills and be a role model, have I seen a student say no. It warms my heart to see a young kid smile as the older kid comes to get them and to see them laughing as they sit side by side and get to work.
We also have great connections between classes. Ms. Cation’s class have worked with our grades 7s to create an environmental display where they ask us to reflect on how we can be green everyday. Last week I watched our grade fours in Mrs. Mesesnel’s class work with Ms. Coffey’s kindergarten class. These are just a few examples of how we create community at Primrose and lift the energy in the building.
Next week is “No Name Calling Week” in the Upper Grand. Language has power and negative language can erode a person’s sense of self worth. Name calling is particularly heinous when it includes racialized or homophobic undertones. Our Pride Club is working on a number of PSAs on the power of language and what to do when someone calls you a name, or when you hear someone engage in name calling. If we all practiced kindness daily, people would feel better about themselves and the world would be a better place.
Please note that the School Council Meeting has been rescheduled for Thursday, January 23rd at 3:45pm. All parents are welcome to attend.
As you are aware, labour negotiations are continuing across the province. The teachers and support staff at Primrose are members of ETFO (teachers) and OSSTF (ECEs, EAs, Office Coordinators). Please carefully pay attention to reliable media sources and visit www.ugdsb.ca/labour to get up to date information on job action.
