Principal’s Message – September 27, 2021

Posted September 27, 2021

What a terrific third week of school at Primrose.  Students are settled into their classrooms and getting use to the routine of school.  This is a very busy week with some exciting events happening at Primrose.

Safety Week

This coming week will be “Safety Week” in our school.  Each year we are required to have six fire drills (3 in the Fall), two lockdown drills, a tornado drill and a bomb threat drill.  Due to Covid measures we will not be evacuating the building, rather we will be talking about what we do in our classrooms.  We will also be sounding the alarm bell so students know what it sounds like and to test our various pull stations in the school.  We will be reassuring students that there are no concerns and that it is a drill.  You may want to let your children know, particularly if your child gets anxious with drills.

Terry Fox Day – Wednesday September 29th

The students will be participating in the Annual School Terry Fox Day on Wednesday September 29th,  2021.  Each class has signed up for a time to complete their run.  We will not be collecting money at school, but encourage those that are interested in making a donation to do so at:

Rowan’s Law Day – Wednesday September 29th – Wear Purple

On Wednesday, September 29th, students, staff, parents/guardians are invited to wear a purple shirt (Rowan’s favourtie colour) to help raise awareness on the impact of concussions and head injuries. This legislation is named in memory of Rowan Stringer who tragically died in 2013 of Second Impact Syndrome, the result of suffering multiple concussion playing rugby three times in six days. She had a concussion but didn’t know her brain needed time to heal. Neither did her parents, teachers or coaches. Rowan’s Law and Rowan’s Law Day were established to honour her memory and bring awareness to concussions and concussion safety.  We will recognize Rowan’s Law Day by educating and engaging in activities that increase awareness about concussions and share Rowan Stringer’s story. The legislation is designed to create a safer environment for competitive amateur athletes, children and youth to play sport.

National Truth and Reconciliation Week – Thursday September 30th – Wear Orange

This past June, the federal government passed legislation designating September 30 as a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to commemorate the history and legacy of Residential Schools in Canada as a statutory holiday. This day is a direct response to Call to Action 80 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Known as Orange Shirt Day from the movement inspired by survivor Phyllis Jack Webstad who, on her first day at residential school in 1973, had her new orange shirt taken from her. This day, and now week, is an opportunity to continue the learning and conversations about the true history of this land now called Canada. September 30 was chosen because September is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools. We remember those children and communities dramatically affected by the Indian Residential Schools System. We hope that these days are just the beginning of these conversations for the year. Our staff will be recognizing this week and using resources provided by the board.
