Volunteers Needed at Primrose

Posted February 9, 2023

Hello Parents/Caregivers,

We are excited to welcome parent volunteers back into the school in many ways!

Volunteering in school has so many benefits for you and your child. Some of the proven benefits are connecting with other parents, building community, getting to know the teachers and administration interacting with your child each day, getting to meet and know your children’s school friends, making the school a better place for all – and it can also be a lot of FUN!

Some of our ongoing programs need your help to run effectively. Below are the ongoing programs in need of immediate assistance. Please scroll down for the full details on each program.

  • Pizza Fridays
  • Salad Bar
  • Milk Days (previous program we would like to bring back)
  • Daily Breakfast / Snack bins prepared for each classroom for hungry kids
  • Pollinator and Vegetable Gardens
  • Fundraising and School Events – BBQ, Movie Night, Spring Fling/Carnival

Please note that you must have a current vulnerable sector check on record with the office in order to volunteer.  You do this by requesting a letter from the school and filling out an application here: www.opp.ca/index.php?id=147&lng=en.   Email Ashley Hopkins at [email protected]

Salad Bar

We ran our first Salad Bar of the year on January 31st, which was a great success! A total of 61 kids participated, and over 100 cups of fresh veggies and greens were served to these kids! We are looking to expand our parent-volunteer group, which will help us keep this lunch option running and hopefully enable us to expand to the younger grades. With enough volunteers, we could also increase the number of dates we offer this.

Details

  • One Tuesday Morning per month (currently the last Tuesday of the month)
  • 2-2.5 hour shifts (specific dates TBA)
  • Prepping, serving and cleanup
  • Working with a team of other parents and students

Pizza Day

Pizza Day is every Friday. Did you know that we serve up 75-90 large pizzas every Friday?  That’s about 750 slices of pizza! We are looking for a couple more parents who can come into the school on a rotating basis to separate the pizza into class orders and send the class lists to the room with the order. Pizza Day takes two parent volunteers to run smoothly.

Details

  • Time commitment is 10:30 am – 12:00 pm
  • One person to handle the pizza (wearing gloves)
  • One person calls out the order to be “picked” and organizes the lists, ensuring the correct quantity, list and gloves are sent with our Intermediate helpers.
  • After all the pizza is distributed, there are about 45 minutes of clean up, box disposal etc.
  • We are also on hand to handle any problems that arise, such as missed orders, dropped pizza etc. Please tell your children if they have a problem on pizza day with their order to find us in the hallway to make it right for them!

Breakfast/Snack Program for Classrooms

Our breakfast club gives a warm welcome, providing nutrition and smiles for our students, to prepare them for the day ahead. Breakfast Clubs of Canada reports that offering a balanced meal in a safe and healthy environment improves attendance, increases knowledge of healthy eating habits, increases concentration, and improves social skills. The Shelburne Breakfast Clubs operate under the guidance of the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington: Food & Friends Program. Breakfast Club is happy to greet any child, with the Food and Friends goal of bringing healthy food to hungry minds.

Details

  • Work in the kitchen preparing food bins on any day(s) you are available from ~7:00am – 8:30am.
  • Follow the specific Nutritional guidelines (PPM 150 Guidelines)
  • Follow Health and Safety best practices
  • General clean-up of the kitchen

Vegetable / Pollinator Gardens

Do you love to garden? There are many ways to help. Primrose has an Eco Club that desperately needs new parent volunteers! We are striving to reach Platinum status again this year and need more involvement to reach this goal.

Details

  • Help students start plants for the gardens (2-3 sessions of 1.5 hours)
  • Spring clean up (cutting back, weeding, adding compost, prepping beds, splitting/potting perennials)
  • Spring Planting (assisting students planting seeds and plants)
  • Summer care (check on the garden over the summer, pick your week)
  • Fall clean-up (Helping kids harvest vegetables, plant garlic, and get beds ready for winter)

Fundraising and School Events

Fundraising is a very important part of a Parent Council.  It allows us to fund programs like Family Transition Place Sessions for Grades 5-8, Blue Spruce Library Programming, Field/Bus Trips, Teacher support, Classroom-specific programs etc. We are also fundraising for a major playground expansion. Volunteers for this are as and when needed and less of a regular occurrence but very important.  This may appeal to you if you are unable to commit to a regular position.

  • Committees
  • Movie Night (coming soon)
  • Special Food days
  • Large events like Winter Celebration, Spring Fling, Fall BBQ
  • Fundraising organization
