Family Literacy Day
Friday, January 27 is Family Literacy Day!  This is a great time to celebrate literacy as a family.  Read the stats on the Family Literacy Day website to see just how important family literacy is.  For example, “Parents’ reading habits play a large role in determining how often kids read: 57% of kids who are frequent readers have parents who read books 5–7 days per week, compared to only 15% of kids who are infrequent readers” (Kids and Family Reading Report – Scholastic, 2017).  And “Children spend five times as much time outside the classroom as they do in school, so parents and caregivers need the tools to support their learning” (The Read-Aloud Handbook, Jim Trelease, 2006).  There are lots of activities on the site that can help you to celebrate family literacy.  This year’s theme for Family Literacy Day is “celebrating your heritage.”  You can click on the website on the right side under “Related News” to read about why learning about one’s heritage is important, and 10 ways that families can learn about their heritage together.  If your child(ren) are in Kindergarten to grade 3, have a look at their Google Classrooms next week for more information from our teacher-librarian Mrs. Patrick.
