Grade 7 Adolescent Health and Informed Choices workshops with EWFHT

Posted October 24, 2019

Dear Grade 7 Parents/Guardians,

We would like to let you know about a learning opportunity that has come available to the grade 7 students at Rockwood Centennial Public School in collaboration with the East Wellington Family Health Team. Local physician, Dr. Rabia Khan (MD, CCFP, Lead Physician, EWFHT), has offered informational and discussion workshops for our Grade 7 students around topics of adolescent health and informed choices. Dr. Khan will come with the lead nurse, Doreen Alexandris, RPN to the school and present to each class about 5 to 6 different times throughout this year. The 50 minute session will start off with 15 minutes of information sharing then transition into two breakout discussion groups.

Topics to be discussed include:

Nutrition: healthy eating habits, how to read labels, fad diets, body image

Mental health: stress and anxiety, healthy sleep habits, eating disorders

Physical health: exercise, body image

Devices: how to set limits, cyber safety

Substance abuse: alcohol, drugs, vaping

These workshops are an excellent opportunity to support our students as they transition into adolescence. Additionally,  it is a great compliment to the Health Curriculum as well as a great follow up from the Grade 6 VIP program offered by the OPP.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office or the EWFHT.
