8 Important things to know about SIB this week!

Posted September 28, 2020

Dear SIB families,

We are starting to settle into our new way of life at SIB. A huge thank you again to everyone for making our start up a success and for respecting the rules around masks and social distancing as it takes a full team effort to make it work. Thanks!

#1 Parent Information: Monitoring and Managing COVID-19, this is an important reminder from Public Health about how we can all work together to help stop the spread. Click the link for more information: https://www.ugdsb.ca/sibps/2020/09/18/parent-information-monitoring-and-managing-covid-19/

#2 Dress for the weather: Teachers k to Gr 8 are taking their students outside as much as possible and to be ready for that we are asking that students come to school prepared to be outside. The weather is starting to turn to fall and wet weather is on it’s way, so please ensure that enough clothes are packed to get your child through the day. Also, we can now add a pair of dry indoor shoes to items brought to the school so no one has to have wet feet. So please feel free to pack an extra pair of shoes on those rainy days. Rain won’t stop us from having fun and learning outside!

#3 Intermediate Students Going Home at Lunch: If you wish for your intermediate child to go home at lunch please send an email to the school office. Due to COVID restrictions this can not a ‘one time’ lunch break instead this is agreeing that your child will go home everyday at the time chosen. Also to help us respect the cohorts we have created and social distancing guidelines, students are not permitted to go to each other’s houses during the lunch break. Thank you for help with this!

#4 Orange Shirt Day is an annual event, held every year on Sept. 30, meant to educate and raise awareness about the residential school system and the impact it had on Indigenous communities for more than a century—an impact that continues today. We encourage staff and students to discuss the importance of reconciliation year round, and as part of these ongoing discussions, to participate in Orange Shirt Day on Sept. 30. We are encouraging everyone to wear an orange shirt on Sept. 30 and take some time to learn about the residential school system.

#5 Terry Fox Run: Last year SIB made an incredible contribution to the Terry Fox Foundation of more than $3 400!!  Things are different this year however, it is an important time!  This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the Terry Fox Run.  Families are invited to participate wherever you are! Around your neighbourhood, backyard, down the street, or around the block. We will unite in spirit, not in person.  Go to the https://terryfox.org/ website to register a virtual run.  You are also invited to make an online donation for cancer research.  Go to Terry Fox School Run, then Find a school/donate to a school. Thank you for your support!

#6 SIB Virtual Open House will start online this coming Monday October 5th. We can’t have everyone in the school this year due to COVID-19 policies so we are bringing the school to you! All the teachers have been hard at work getting a small presentation ready for you so you can connect with them and see what it’s like in your child’s class. The presentations will be shared in your child’s google classroom so be sure that you can access it. If you have any problems accessing the google classroom please reach out to your child’s teacher.

#7 Masks, timing and social distancing on the tarmac: To help with social distancing protocols before and after school, we are asking that all students and parents/guardians please wear a mask when they enter the school grounds (tarmac area at the back of the school). We also encourage students to not arrive on the school grounds before 8:35am to help avoid unorganized large groupings. Parents/guardians we also need your help to please keep reminding your children about the importance of social distancing. We are at full student attendance and therefore we have many people in this area and this will help protect everyone.

#8 Absent or Late? If you know that your child(ren) will be absent or late please call the school 519-824-1442, as you can leave a message 24 hours a day. If you leave a message on our machine and you know that your child will be absent for longer than one day please leave those details as well so the office can be as accurate as possible. Thanks!

News regarding school is constantly being updated. SIB will continue to communicate with families step by step with information when it becomes available as we move through the school year. Please continue to check your email, twitter and our website https://www.ugdsb.ca/sibps/ daily for updates.

Stay a safe distance and stay positive!
