This week @ SIB – June 1st

Posted June 1, 2021

Dear SIB families,

Welcome to JUNE! A reminder that this Friday is a PA Day so there will be no class for students online or in person. Here are this week’s SIB announcements and reminders:

#1 SIB’s Canadian flag has been lowered in honour of 215 children whose lives were taken at a former residential school From May 31 to June 7, the Upper Grand District School Board will lower all flags at school and office buildings, where possible, to honour the 215 children whose lives were taken at a former residential school in Kamloops, B.C. As we collectively mourn this horrific loss, we acknowledge that there cannot be reconciliation without truth. The lowering of flags is not enough; substantial work must be done in our communities, schools (including SIB) and systems to face the historical and current atrocities faced by Indigenous communities, and to ensure that Indigenous staff and students are not deprived of their rights, and can learn and work in an environment free of racism and discrimination. In the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report there are 94 Calls to Action. We need to read these documents and do this work.

#2 June is PRIDE month: SIB supports the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. The school is flying the Pride flag starting today as just one of many ways to show our support.

#3 This FRIDAY is a PA DAY (June 4th): There will not be any in-school or online learning on Friday.

#4 Remote Learning Option for the 2021-22 School Year: The Upper Grand District School Board is looking forward to welcoming students back in September 2021.

The UGDSB will offer a remote learning option for students in the 2021-22 school year. Please note that the UGDSB remote learning program for the 2021-22 school year will NOT be a “hybrid model.” Students who register for remote school will be placed in the standalone remote school, where classes are staffed by dedicated remote learning teachers. To read all the details and to access the Remote School Registration Form please click the link that will take you to our website: https://www.ugdsb.ca/sibps/2021/05/20/registration-for-the-2021-22-elementary-remote-school-is-may-20-june-3/

NOTE: Only families who want their children to attend remote school need to register. If you do not register your child will be automatically returned to SIB for in-school learning for the fall.

#5 Report Cards for Term 2 will be distributed electronically this year: Parents will be able to access their children’s reports online at the end of the school year. Watch for more information soon.

#6 A note about evaluation during remote learning: In June, your child will receive their report card for Term 2. You will see your child’s achievement for Term 1, and will see their achievement and comments for Term 2. Student work that has been completed and assessed during both in-class and remote learning will be factored into the final mark.

If students have not participated to a full extent in remote learning and teachers are not able to determine a grade for the report card due to insufficient evidence, you will see the letter ‘I’ and comments for Term 2. This does not mean that your child did not complete any work. It means that there has not been enough evidence gathered to accurately report a grade. For these students, teachers will reach out to families and provide additional information so that parents are aware, prior to receiving the June report card.

During these final weeks of learning for the 2020 – 2021 school year, please continue to reach out to your child’s teacher if you wish to discuss your child’s progress.
