Principal’s Message

It’s hard to believe that we have come to the end of another year together. It seems like only a few months ago that we were setting up for the first day of school. Through your time, support, and encouragement, we have had ten incredibly busy but wonderful months!

Thank you to Mrs. Turp, Mrs. Sheridan, Mrs. Faria, and Mrs. Lamonica for brainstorming and problem-solving with students during lunch time and recess. You always take the time to listen to students and have a special sense for anticipating where problems may arise. Mrs. Turp has also made such a significant impact as a primary-junior reading tutor to support students who need that little boost to get them reading! Thanks also to Karen Bishop and Amanda Long, our hard working custodians, for always being available and present when custodial or other needs arise. We benefit greatly by the pride you take in your work each and every day!

We will have some staff changes in September. Unfortunately, Mrs. Park, Ms. Bascom, Ms. Carruthers, Mr. Shoesmith, and Ms. Payne have been with us as temporary staff and will not be with us in September. We wish them all the best in their next assignment and have appreciated all their contributions to the Spencer community. As well, Mrs. Wouters has accepted a program position at the Board Office, and Mrs. Vaughan will be heading to Montgomery Village P.S in September. We wish them all the best in their new positions and thank them for their dedication to our students. We would also like to extend best wishes to Mrs. Hewitt who will be enjoying a year travelling and with her family and Mrs. Cottrell and Mrs. Lakhani who will be off spending time with their babies. They will be missed but we look forward to having them visit. We wish all of them the very best in their new endeavors !

Have a safe and happy summer!

Bell Time Changes

We will be experiencing a change to our bell times in September. Beginning on the first day, our new start time will be 8:30am. Students will have supervision beginning at 8:15am. The day will conclude at 2:50pm. Please see the schedule below for lunch and recess times.

8:30a.m – Start of Day

10:30a.m – 11:10a.m First Nutrition/Recess Break

12:50p.m – 1:30p.m Second Nutrition/Recess Break

2:50p.m – End of Day

Class Placements

In keeping with privacy legislation and student safety, schools in Upper Grand D.S.B. will not be posting class lists. Student placements will not be shared prior to the first day of school for a number of reasons. It is possible that teacher assignments may change, class organizations may alter due to student enrollment, students may fret about not being with a certain friend while overlooking new ones, and a great deal of time and care has been invested by this year’s teachers to create classes that are well balanced in a variety of ways.

First Day of School Procedures

Grade 1-8 students are asked to arrive to the school yard prior to the school start time of 8:30a.m. When the bell rings, students are to line up and proceed to their previous years’ classroom. The teacher in that room will have the updated class lists and will direct the students to their new teacher and classroom. To help with organization and getting started as soon as possible, while also avoiding possible upset for some students, we ask that parents offer their hugs and goodbyes prior to students entering the school.

Is it possible that classes will need to be re-organized after the first day of school?

Similar to the past few years, class organizations will not be final until the end of the third week in September. In order to comply with class size regulations, there is a possibility that we will be required to re-organize some classes. This would involve a change of teachers from the first day of school. We appreciate your support and patience if we have to work through this process.

How do I find out about bussing arrangements?

Transportation information for a new school year is available the second last week of August. Go to www.findmybus.ca and login to this secure site with your child’s OEN number, school name, birth date and house number. Your child(ren’s) 9 digit OEN number is located on their report card. The only students who receive letters about bussing arrangement are new students without an OEN (Ontario Education Number).

For other important bussing information, you might want to look at transportation’s ‘Frequently Asked Questions website.’ (www.stwdsts.ca):

School Cash-Online Payments

Spencer Avenue E.S. uses School Cash Online, which allows for parents to make online payments for agendas, student trips, food purchases, etc. Please take a few minutes over the summer weeks to register and get a sense of how everything is laid out if you haven’t already done so, ugdsb.SchoolCashOnline.com

Attendance during the first couple weeks of September

If you any have plans that would involve your child being away during the first week of school, please call to let us know. This is critical information for us to have and may help reduce the number of class changes required.

Life-Threatening Management Plans

If your child has a life-threatening condition or illness, please ensure that you communicate the details with the office. A life-threatening management and prevention plan must be updated each year.

Police Checks for September

  • Police Checks: Adults/parents who would like to be a regular volunteer at the school or attend school trips need an up-to-date police check, that includes the vulnerable sector screening. For school purposes, police checks are valid for one year. With July/August approaching, it might be a good time to think about renewing your police check.

School Calendar

The school calendar continues to be located on our school website at http://www.ugdsb.ca/spencer/. Please visit it regularly throughout the year for upcoming events.
