Spencer Avenue E.S News and Updates
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As the start of October is fast approaching, I would like to assure you that the health and safety of our students, families and staff remains our top priority. I would also like to thank you for your patience while we have been working through our new routines and our plan for a safe return to school for students and staff. Below you will find some updated information, upcoming dates and hopefully, some answers to your questions.
The last seven months have been the most remarkable time in our school’s history and indeed in our lifetimes. There is no doubt that in facing this challenging time, it is our community that sustains us. We are Spencer Avenue E.S and we are better together!
School Resources on Website
For more information concerning school policies and procedures, please refer to the school website. Information is updated regularly and includes the school calendar, code of conduct and the COVID site plan. https://www.ugdsb.ca/spencer/
Visitors to Our School
For safety reasons, only essential workers will be permitted in the school this year. Parents and volunteers will not have access to the school.
At this point, UGDSB is requesting schools postpone school, class and individual photos. At present, we are only permitting essential workers into the school. We are limiting that definition to emergency response personnel and maintenance staff. In addition, we have a number of students learning remotely and not presently in our building.
During the school day, your child’s safety is of the utmost importance to us. It is imperative that you call the office before 9:00am if your child is going to be absent or late. For your convenience, we also have voicemail which allows you to contact the school at any time during the night, over the weekends and early in the morning. The phone number is 519-942-9590 ext 100. When you leave a message, please be sure to note the child’s full name, teacher and reason for absence.
Before your child(ren) leave for school in the morning it is important to check for COVID symptoms (see Public Health information on the Spencer website or UGDSB website). If your child exhibits one of the symptoms related to COVID they will be isolated and a parent/guardian will be called for immediate pick up.

Virtual Open House – October 1st
This year our teachers will be sending out a short video and/or a slideshow showcasing their classroom. You will find this posted in their Google Classroom on October 1st. If you are unable to access your child’s Google Classroom, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.
Please be aware that students are not permitted to ride their scooters, bikes and/or skateboards on school property. Students are asked to walk their bike to the bike rack and wait their turn to store their bike. Skateboards/scooters will not be allowed in the school.
We are currently spending a considerable amount of time learning outside. Please ensure your child(ren) are dressed appropriately for the weather when they leave for the day. Our expectations are that classes will continue to be outside moving into the fall.
Terry Fox and School Fundraising
As we continue to focus on new protocols to help keep students and staff safe, the Upper Grand District School Board has notified schools that school-organized fundraising will be paused at this time.
The board recognizes that fundraising is a big part of school culture, however at this time, the board would like to focus on efforts to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19 in our schools, and to that end limit the number of occasions where funds and goods are changing hands. There may still be some events that schools participate in, but without the fundraising component. The annual Terry Fox Run is one example of this. While individual classroom teachers may choose to take students out on the yard for a socially distanced walk/run, the school will not be collecting funds. Parents may, however, donate directly to the foundation online.
The UGDSB knows that there are many people in our families and communities who are in need and will work with schools and our community partners to continue to support those in need through community partnerships and direct support. The board also encourages families and students who are interested in supporting a cause to support them directly rather than through their school at this time.
The board will continue to revisit this decision and make adjustments accordingly, but for the time being we thank everyone for their understanding that school-organized fundraisers will be on hold.
You are invited to join the Spencer Ave. School Council! Our first meeting will be Thursday, October 8th, 6:30 pm. All meetings this year will be held virtually. Everyone is welcome! Please email me if you are interested in joining Council and assuming a role on our team. [email protected]
