Principal’s Message – September 25, 2021

Posted September 25, 2021

Did you know that a number of our families speak a different first language at home?  If you read the Principal’s Message on our school website, you are able to select the language you want to read it in.  The language tab is located at the top left corner of the home page.

This week we welcomed our new Director of Education, Peter Sovran, to Spencer Ave, along with our Superintendent, Denise Heaslip.  They had an opportunity to do a walkthrough of the school and to chat with some of our students and staff.  A highlight of their visit was the Learning Commons/ Makerspace.  I can’t tell you how excited our students are that this space is open and they are able to explore again.  Thank you to Ms. McLarnon, Mrs. Turp and the team of students who have worked so hard to put the space back together again after a year of not being able to use it.

We are so thankful to be able to give students some leadership opportunities again.  Thank you to those students helping in the Makerspace, our office helpers, our Snack Bin coordinators and those sitting on the Bullying Prevention Committee.  More opportunities will be coming soon…stay tuned.

A reminder to students and parents on rainy days to dress for the weather and try to arrive as close to the bell as possible.  Due to supervision challenges we only let students into the building before the school if there is extreme weather (e.g., thunderstorms, extreme cold.)

Thank you to all parents for diligently doing the School Covid Screening each day with your children and keeping them home if they are ill.  Just a note, that a Covid test must be completed at one of the official Covid testing centres as this helps Public Health track any positive cases and to be able to follow up with schools.  Rapid testing at home or at a location like a pharmacy is not considered sufficient.  Also, a note that if your child does not pass the screening or they present with a Covid symptom from the list at school, all unvaccinated siblings must remain at home/ be sent home too.  The current protocol requires students to stay home for 10 days or until they get a negative Covid test, or are diagnosed by a doctor with another reason.  Current protocols can be found at Public Health’s website under the school tab.

A reminder that we are having our first School Council meeting virtually on Tuesday at 6:30pm.  All parents are welcome to attend.  This is the night we elect our new executive.    The link to the meeting is below:
