Forest of Reading

The Forest of Reading program will begin at Victory in January.  It is Canada’s largest recreational reading program and is an initiative of the Ontario Library Association.  The Forest of Reading celebrates and promotes Canadian books, authors, illustrators, publishers & Canadian content.  It is designed to encourage a love of reading.

The books nominated for the Forest of Reading programs are all curated by educators and librarians across Ontario.  The program is divided into a number of different levels and age groups.  The Blue Spruce books target Kindergarten to Grade 2, Silver Birch Express focuses on Grades 3 & 4, while Silver Birch is intended for students in Grades 5 & 6.  On the French side, both the Prix Peuplier and the Prix Mélèze can be used with the Immersion students we have here at Victory.  There are 10 books in each of the programs.  Every class at Victory will have the opportunity to participate.  Students and teachers can read all ten of the titles, or pick and choose to read only the ones they are interested in. Students will then be able to vote for their favourite title within that reading program.  An award is given to the author & illustrator of the book with the most votes from participating students across Ontario.  After the programs are completed, these wonderful books then become part of our Library and Learning Commons collection.

Currently, teachers are reading the books and then making short videos to promote each of the titles to the students.  Thank you to School Council for their continued support of the Forest of Reading programs.  We could not run all of these quality programs without their support!
