Westminster Woods P.S. School Council Minutes

Meeting Date: Monday, November 6th, 2017

Present: Jacquie Hulm-Mehagan, Angela Popofski, Tim Dickieson, Allison Stoffman, Cherise Johnson, Beth Greenfield, Melanie Taylor, Valerie Jameson, Mahrukh Syed, Stacy Anderson, Tiffany Moniz and Lisa Matchett

Welcome: Meeting called to order at 6:30 p.m. by Beth

Review and Acceptance of Past Minutes: Motion to accept the minute of October’s meeting by Angela, seconded by Cherise

Principal’s Report:

Staffing Information:
– New Staff: 0.5 LTO Breanne Hart-Ruhl for Kindergarten and Primary planning in the afternoons
– EAs: Lindsay Yuen has been hired for the afternoons

Updates:
1. Superintendent visit tomorrow to see the school
2. Remembrance Day Assembly is on the 10th and is being organized by Mr. Scott’s class
3. Ryan Laird presentation “Bigger Than That” was successful.
4. Bullying Prevention week is November 20-24.
5. Online Interview Booking for Nov. 23 and 24. Link will be live soon.

Events in November:
1. Grade 7 and 8 to River Run on Nov. 8
2. Grade 5 classes to Crawford Lake on Nov. 10
3. Waste Audit on Nov. 15
4. Progress Reports go home on Nov. 16
5. Parent/Teacher Interviews Nov. 23 and 24
6. PD Day Nov. 24
7. Grade 6, 7 and 8 VIP on Nov. 27
8. Picture Retake Day Nov. 28
9. Grade 1 and 2 to River Run Nov. 29

Information Items:
– mulch was blown into the climber area; however the climber is now closed until the spring as per board policy
– Mind Up Curriculum and Tools for Life Training staff development
– working on Urgent Student Learning Needs as a staff
– Number Talks: working on building flexibility in our students’ math thinking and thinking about numbers
– NEW Online booking for Parent-Teacher Interviews! Letter coming home this week. parents will need student’s OEN (found on the top of report cards) and birthdate to book interviews
– Progress Reports being sent home on November 16th

Treasurer’s Report:
– $137.25 in milk sales from 09/18/17 to 10/25/17
– $2488.34 paid to the Dairy Depot. Current milk balance is $7989.14
– Received $1000.00 from the Upper Grand Learning Foundation – earmarked for the annual family picnic
– Community building current account balance is $4011.32
– Big Box sales total was $19858.20, Storm ticket sales generated $270.00
– $14240.00 paid to Big Box. Current Fundraising and Special Projects account balance is $5974.61
– Received $1000.00 from the Learning Foundation – deposited into Schoolyard Improvements
– $428.50 paid to Forestell for summer watering
– Future Schoolyard Improvements current account balance is $15611.74

Fundraising Report:

Big Box of Birthday Cards:
– Were sent nine boxes of all occasion cards we can return to Big Box for a refund
– Have six unsold boxes of cards we will keep and try to sell
– Made $7000.00 profit – short of the $10000.00 goal we had set
– Randomly drew for the various individual and class prize winners

QSP:
– order form was sent out, runs until the end of November

Guelph Storm:
– sold 80 tickets
– can pay for the additional 20 tickets and make $40.00

– Motion to buy the extra tickets by Cherise, seconded by Melanie. Motion was unanimously
passed.
– Parental supervision is required at all times. Children must wear helmets during the free skate. No helmet, no ice.

Planet Bean:
– the company needs two weeks to accumulate the order for delivery
– order forms will be sent out mid-November for delivery before Christmas

Community Building:

Multi-Cultural Night:
– November 30th, 5:30-7:30
– have 12 booths different representing different countries/cultures with food, dancing and music ; passports will be given to students to get stamps at each booth
– need a way to see how many people intend on coming so people can prepare the right amount of food samples; flyer with RSVP will be sent home with students
– advertising – posters displayed around the school, read on morning announcements
– will laminate the booth signs so we can re-use them
– keep all receipts to track costs
– require volunteers 5:00 – 8:00; sending out email for sign-up in time slots
– fill out form for Kirsten to set up a robo call to remind parents

Playground & Greening:
– Melanie, Beth, and Cherise attending the Evergreen Playground workshop on Wednesday, November 8th to go over playground plans/ideas
– more info next meeting!

Milk Program:
– requested milk bags in August
– will cost $7.50/bag (X 27 classrooms), total cost of $202.50 and they only last 1-2 years
– using reusable grocery bags at the moment

– decided not to buy from the dairy but keep using the bags we have and perhaps approach Longo’s or Zehr’s about donating new bags

Old Business:

Spirit Wear Storefront:
– have sold $450.00 in merchandise but don’t know what items were purchased or who purchased them
– will ask the webmaster to put the link up permanently on the website
– we can advertise for group sale orders

Council T-Shirts:
– order one size and pass them out

Bulletin Board:
– get decorating/content ideas to Melissa
– include upcoming meeting dates, events and meeting minutes

New Business:

Math Night:
– joint PRO grant with Fred Hamilton and Arbor Vista schools
– $1000 budget but the other schools can help with extra costs
– Jump2Math – February 8th, two hour program hosted in the gym
– require volunteers to manage the different math centers
