GUELPH, Ontario – The Upper Grand District School Board is conducting a strategic review of secondary school education across the district.

The purpose of the review is to create a guiding vision for secondary education in the UGDSB to meet the learning needs of all students. We are gathering feedback and information on existing programs to create a current snapshot of secondary education in the UGDSB.

To facilitate this review, the board has established a Working Group that represents our stakeholders including students, parents, teachers, principals, support staff, federation partners and trustees. The Working Group will honour and highlight the great work already taking place in our schools and provide the board with an opportunity to build on those existing efforts to evolve in ways that continue to benefit our students and families.

Through the Working Group, we will seek input and diverse perspectives. In the second week of September, secondary students, their parents/guardians, and secondary staff will complete an online survey, giving their thoughts on various learning characteristics and skills they feel are most important for success in school and in their lives.

This review will not make changes to any current UGDSB secondary programs, nor will it result in the creation of new programs at this time, as those decisions are made in accordance with the board’s Long Term Accommodation Plan process. However, the Working Group could make recommendations that would inform future decisions.

Throughout the review, the Working Group will also gather input through focus groups and the board’s existing committees, including but not limited to Student Senate, the Parent Involvement Committee, Special Education Advisory Committee, and French as a Second Language Advisory Committee. In addition, the Working Group will explore other types of secondary program models in the province to inform the discussions.

The Working Group will produce a report that will go to the Board of Trustees in December 2018.

Additional information about the review, including links to the parent and student surveys, will be made available on www.ugdsb.ca.
