Principal’s Monthly Message

Posted January 12, 2020

An automated phone call went out on Friday to all UGDSB families about upcoming job action occurring this Wednesday, January 15.  All Elementary and Secondary Schools will be closed to students.  The labour unrest will also impact upcoming field trips and parent information nights.  Updates and information will be sent home in the form of notes and phone calls from the office as well as central callouts from the Board Office. I will send a note home early this week regarding field trips that outlines how parents will be reimbursed for payments already made for trips that we have to cancel.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the school.

Grade 8 Parent Information Night at GCVI has been cancelled for this Wednesday but will run on February 4th.  More information to follow this week.

Our Breakfast and Snack Programs are used daily by 25% of the students at Westwood.  Through funding from the Children’s Foundation, we provide fruits, vegetables, healthy whole grain and dairy options for students each day.  While we do receive funding, we also rely on donations from the community.  Thank you to parents and members of the community who have made monetary and food donations.  Your generosity is greatly appreciated!!  A big thank you to Jan our “Snack Lady” who comes to Westwood 4 days a week to prep food for the students.  Many thanks also go out to Amanda and Margaret who do weekly shopping for breakfast and snack foods.  If you would like to donate to this valuable program, please contact the office.

On Tuesday, January 21st, Zehrs Imperial will be running an Eat Together Breakfast for students at Westwood.  Zehrs has sponsored our school in the past and we are really looking forward to the event.  Sharing a nutritious meal  is a wonderful way to promote health and wellness and build school community.  Thank you Zehrs Imperial!!

We are always looking for extra clothing for students.  Currently we are in need of boots and snow pants.  If your children have out grown things we will gladly take them.  We are also in need of extra pants for our kindergarten age students.  Thank you!

A reminder that School Council meets the first Thursday of the month at 6:45pm in the Community Room.  All are welcome.

As always, if you have questions, comments or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Tara Topping
