Dear Parents/Guardians,

On March 5, 2020, the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF) announced further sanctions in response to provincial bargaining. These additional sanctions came into effect on March 9, 2020.

These new sanctions include restrictions as to what would be completed on secondary school interim report cards, as well as restrictions on the distribution of school and board materials.

In Ontario, interim report cards are not a mandatory part of the evaluation of course content for secondary schools. They are completed early each semester in order to give parents feedback with respect to their child’s progress. These reports are completed voluntarily by teachers. In the UGDSB, these reports historically have not included marks but rather focused on learning skills and an overall assessment of a student’s progress to date. They have also included information on lates and absences.

The sanctions now in place would cause these reports to be partially or entirely incomplete. As such, UGDSB has decided to cancel the interim report cards for semester 2. However, parent teacher interviews at all secondary schools will proceed as scheduled.

OSSTF has not released any information about the completion of midterm report cards scheduled for distribution in April. We will continue to monitor that situation and keep parents informed in the coming weeks.

Please note that Individual Education Plans (IEPs) will be distributed as per normal procedures.

We thank you for your understanding.
