January News 2021

Posted January 5, 2021

DownloadDecember was a wonderful month of celebration, recognition of hard work, time together and giving.  Together we enjoyed a beautiful virtual holiday assembly with class presentations.  Thank you to all of our families who donated to socks, hats and mitts, items for the Guelph Food Bank and Cards for the Community project.  The two Guelph Food Bank bins were overflowing and in total we filled four garbage bags full of socks, hats, and mitts.

Wishing everyone a safe and Happy New Year!

Important information about Kindergarten Registration this January

We’re getting ready to welcome our newest group of little learners to the school!

Kindergarten registration for the 2020/2021 school year takes place from January 5, 2021.

All Junior and Senior Kindergarten students new to the UGDSB must pre-register online. (SK students who are attending a UGDSB school for JK do not need to pre-register online).

Pre-registering online starting January 5 will save families time by allowing you to fill out important forms and documentation when it’s convenient for you.

Once you’ve pre-registered online, parents/guardians must reach out to their child’s home school before the Jan. 19th deadline, in order to make a plan to drop off documentation and complete their registration.

Please note that all parents hoping to register their child for JK French Immersion must complete their registration document verification by Jan. 17 at 4:00 p.m.

For more information on how to register and the JK French Immersion selection process, please visit www.ugdsb.ca/jkregistration.

There are some exciting reading opportunities coming up for students and staff at William C. Winegard! First, this January we will once again be launching the annual Forest of Reading program. Over the course of the program, students in JK to Grade 2 have the opportunity to read (or have read to them) 10 new picture books by Canadian authors. Students in Grades 3 to 8 may choose to join one of four book clubs where they will also be reading new books by Canadian authors and selecting a favourite book from various categories. The book clubs will be virtual this year, but students will still have the opportunity to connect with Ms. Upper and other participating staff about their reading, as well as to celebrate their reading accomplishments in the spring.

Secondly, on February 17th, our school is helping to celebrate “I Read Canadian Day.” This is a national day of celebration of Canadian books for young people wherein our entire nation has been challenged to “Read Canadian” for 15 minutes and to share their experience at their library, in their school, with their families and friends, or on social media.
