EJPS Week at a Glance (Oct 23-27)

Posted October 23, 2023

Chers parents,

First, I want to thank all the volunteers who came out to clean up our front gardens. The overgrowth was overwhelming and required tremendous hard work to be taken on by our brave parent volunteers. Now, we can actually see the school! Merci beaucoup! In other news, the 2022-23 EQAO results for all public schools are now available for viewing. Please take a look at our results to be aware of trends in our school, in our school board, and across the province. You can see our full results here: https://www.eqao.com/report/?id=4473&mident=166472

For a quick glance, see the graphs below to see how our Grade 3 and Grade 6 performed in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. Please note that the language of the EQAO assessments in Grade 3 and Grade 6 Reading and Writing were in English. The language of the EQAO assessment in Grade 3 Math was in French. The language of the EQAO assessment in Grade 6 Math was in English. We are proud of the hard work that our Primary and Junior teachers and our students take on every day to uphold our learning performance to the standards of the province. One special note regarding some good improvement that occurred in our Grade 6 Math results.  We jumped up 10.3%!  In 2021-22 our Grade 6s were 61.1% at or above the provincial standard. In 2022-23 our Grade 6s improved to 71.4% at or above the provincial standard.

FLU SEASON AROUND THE CORNER

The coming months are a time when many of us start to catch colds, flus, and viruses. Many of our students and staff members live with or interact closely with loved ones among vulnerable populations. Please continue to use and follow the advice of public health to help assess your child’s health if you suspect they are feeling unwell and to learn how you can help them recover quickly and also lower the chance of infecting others.  https://www.ontario.ca/self-assessment/

Key Protective Measures

As a school board, we want to remind everyone of the importance of many standard  protective strategies to help keep staff and students safe and healthy.  Strategies such as frequent hand washing, respiratory etiquette and making the most of our outdoor spaces for learning continue to contribute to the health and well-being of students and staff.  Classes in the UGDSB will continue to have a standalone HEPA filter unit with more than 2500 of these units deployed across the system. In addition  to these measures, the UGDSB will continue to support students, staff and visitors to our schools and respect their individual choices about masking.

Management of Illness in Schools

The UGDSB will continue to follow the direction of WDGPH for appropriate responses to illnesses in our community. Please visit their website for the most current information about COVID-19: https://wdgpublichealth.ca/covid-19/covid-19-information-public/status-cases-wdg

Cases of respiratory illness generally increase throughout the fall and winter months. Please review the most current guidance from the Ministry of Health throughout the season: https://www.ontario.ca/page/protection-covid-19-and-other-respiratory-illnesses

ATTENDANCE SUPPORT

This week our tips for supporting your child’s attendance at school focuses on ways to involve the school. See below for some strategies you could try.

  • Know that there are supports in your child’s school.  Connect with them as soon as an issue starts. Connecting earlier is better than when your child has missed a lot of school.
  • If your child wants to leave school, try to have them connect with a caring adult in the school first to see if things can be worked out before your child goes home.
  • Reach out to your school Principal and/or Guidance department for help if your child is not coming to school.  Let’s talk!  There is no judgement!
  • A welcoming school approach has proven to be quite effective. Ensure your child is familiar with their school Principal, Vice-Principal and other caring adults in the building.
  • Talk to the school team about anything you are hearing might be difficult for your child at school.  School staff are always ready to help problem solve.
  • Have a mental health plan created with your child and school staff and ensure there is a safe place to go in the school when your child may need some quiet time.
  • If going into the classroom is hard – remember coming into the school building and meeting with a caring adult in a safe space is an important step in getting back to school.
