EJPS Week at a Glance (Oct 30-Nov 3)

Chers parents,

Time is passing by quickly and it’s amazing to realize that we have already had eight weeks of school! Progress Reports will be coming home in about four weeks (Nov 16). I have advised teachers that as this date approaches that they should reach out in the upcoming weeks to any parents whose child they feel might report as progressing with difficulty on the Progress Report and discuss strategies to help the student achieve their full potential. Progressing with difficulty on the Progress Report means that the overall current assessment data (products, observations, conversations) falls below the provincial standard (the provincial standard is B- to B+) and that according to the teacher’s professional judgment they believe the student could potentially not meet the provincial standard by the end of the first school term (end of January/beginning of February). All children learn at different rates and this is not cause for alarm. Progressing with difficulty on the Progress report does not necessarily mean your child is failing in a specific subject area. The Progress Report provides an opportunity for feedback, goal setting and timely interventions if needed. Your child’s teacher will reach out to you if there is a concern.

In other news, thank you for your continued support by NOT using the staff parking lot as a Kiss N Ride. By doing this you are keeping everyone safe at those busy transition times. Speaking of transition times, I would like to mention a few things about the times just before and after school hours. As a reminder, please do not allow your children to use the swings or the climbers before school. For after school, parents who are supervising their children are welcome to watch their children use the climbers between Sept and the end of October and April and the end of June. Please do not allow your child to play on the school grounds just after the bell if they will not be  supervised by yourself or a designated parent. Lastly, please keep your children out of the Kindergarten pen right after the end of day bell as this is a prepared environment and unfortunately toys and objects have been broken or gone missing.

As you know we love parent volunteers. We have Gr 5. ECO Stars CELP Field Trip, the Junior Soccer Tournament, and River Run shows are coming up.  Volunteers need to have a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) and an updated UGDSB Volunteer Agreement on file with the school.

FAQs

What is an updated 2023-24 UGDSB Volunteer Agreement?

You had a Vulnerable Sector Check completed by the Guelph Police or OPP last school year and you signed and filled out a Volunteer Agreement form last year. The Vulnerable Sector Check you provide the school will be valid for 5 years.

What if I did not fill out a 2023-24 UGDSB Volunteer Agreement?

You will need to get a Vulnerable Sector Check completed by the Guelph Police or OPP as soon as possible and then fill out the 2023-24 Volunteer Agreement form. The principal will have to review the form and assess your volunteering privileges. You cannot volunteer until this process is complete.

Do I have to fill out a UGDSB Volunteer Agreement every year?

Yes.

Do I have to get a Vulnerable Sector Check completed every year?

No. The Vulnerable Sector Check you provide the school will stay on file and will be valid for 5 years. You will need to complete the UGDSB Volunteer Agreement form each year.

ATTENDANCE

This week, let’s discuss some things to do if all the strategies you’ve tried so far to encourage regular attendance at school with your child haven’t worked.

  • Be consistent! Don’t give up. And know that there are supports for parents if you need them. “Put on your own oxygen mask, before others.”
  • There are resources available within schools and community supports if there are other barriers to attendance such as having enough food for lunches.
  • Here’s a great resources with existing handouts and evidence based information: https://www.attendanceworks.org/
