EJPS Week at a Glance (Jan 29-Feb 2)

Chers parents,

Thank you so much for the wave of parents who answered my call for the need for volunteer recess supervisors. I was able to fill the spots in less than 5 minutes after hitting send! This speaks to the great partnership we have here at EJPS. I am one lucky principal! In other news, and as mentioned in last week’s message, the Forest of Reading and Black Heritage/Brillance/Future’s Month is kicking off. We look forward to lots of meaningful learning in the coming weeks.

As term 1 comes to an end, report cards will be coming home in about two weeks (February 15th). I have advised teachers that as this date approaches that they should reach out in the upcoming days and weeks to any parents whose child’s progress is of concern. Seeing C level grades on the report card means that the overall current assessment data (products, observations, conversations) falls below the provincial standard (the provincial standard is B- to B+) and that according to the teacher’s professional judgment they believe the student has not met the provincial standard by the end of the first school term. All children learn at different rates and this is not cause for alarm. Seeing a C on the report card does not necessarily mean your child is failing in a specific subject area. The term 1 report card provides an opportunity for feedback, goal setting and timely interventions that can be implemented throughout term 2. Your child’s teacher will reach out to you if there is a concern.

Something we’ve noticed lately is that your children are growing bigger, taller, and stronger. They are also getting hungrier with their growth spurts and we have many kids regularly asking for additional food. We always have snacks handy and are happy to hand them out. However, it is always a good idea to check in with your kids if they need a bit more food in their lunch.

Happy Lunar New Year to our community members who celebrate this special day which is recognized in so many places and countries including here in Canada. Wishing you great happiness and prosperity!

Olivier Cutz (Principal)
