EJPS Week at a Glance (April 15 – 19)

Chers parents,

I wanted to share an important update on the status of our climbers after receiving the board’s playground inspection report. Both climber structures and the swings have been deemed unsafe due to a myriad of needed repairs. With that being said, all of those pieces of equipment cannot be used during school hours. We are aiming to get these repairs done as soon as possible. Any use of this equipment outside of school hours will be at the users or parent supervisors’ own risk. Moreover, I want to highlight that I know how much some families enjoy watching their children use the climbing equipment when supervision ends after 3:05 PM. I think this is a great community bonding opportunity. However, I would appreciate it if parents could hold off on this routine until I can give the report back that the equipment is safe. Thank you for your cooperation!

We had another great week filled with engaging learning. Our students are moving forward at a good pace in all areas of the curriculum and as a whole school we are working towards our school-wide Math Learning Open House titled “Power in Numbers” on May 8th where each class will contribute to sharing their learning in creative ways around the intersection of numeracy and the world around them. Additionally, we will have other complementary events going on that evening in coordination with our School Council and parent volunteers. As the date approaches we will share more details.

In other news, we had an effective hold & secure and lockdown drill exercise today where our students and staff followed the procedures with great precision and in a timely manner. We learned about some areas of improvement and will continue to always look to do better.

We wanted to share the final tally of the Dance-a-thon donations we received this year. We are happy to announce that the final total for Dance-a-thon is $8329. Which IS an all time high beating 2021’s total by a close $19! Thank you EJ community!

We are continuing to share information to help families support their child’s attendance at school. Below are some tips you can try that involve the routines and the environment at home.

  • Practice consistent bedtime and morning routines with your child.
  • Parents can model the same routine at home, as it helps students stick to the routine of coming to school each day.
  • Having a set schedule for sleep and nutrition is key to a good morning and feeling good about coming to school.
  • Preparing for school at night so that the morning is less hectic can be helpful.  Organizing clothing, packing backpacks and including favourite foods can be reassuring.
  • Putting out clothes and making lunch the night before can help get your child out the door in the morning.
  • If your child does refuse to attend school, try having no screens/devices during the time when they are at home. Make staying home as boring as possible! Shutting down the home Internet can be helpful if this is a draw for your child to stay at home.
  • Creating an environment conducive for improved sleep hygiene (e.g. dark room, quiet, sound machine, light in morning, consistent bed and wake times).
  • Ensuring at least 30 minutes of screen-free time before bed and removing all electronics from bedrooms before bed can be helpful.
  • Limiting screen time before bed is key to winding-down and getting a great night’s sleep!

Remember, every day counts. Together, we can make a positive impact on students’ education, well-being and future. For more information, please visit the UGDSB website: https://www.ugdsb.ca/parents/student-attendance-at-school-tips-and-strategies-for-families/

We have many days of significance happening around this time of year. On International Day of Pink we have let our community know that our school is a safe space for all. I also want to wish our muslim families a belated joyous Eid which occurred this week.

Enjoy your weekend,
