Fall

Hello Arbour Vista families,

The fall air is finally here, and our school is buzzing with excitement! There is  a lot to look forward to as we settle into this beautiful season. This week, many of our students will proudly represent Arbour Vista in both the Junior and Intermediate Cross Country events. We know you will make us proud, not only by showcasing your athletic talents but also by exemplifying great sportsmanship.

VOLUNTEERING FOR SPORTS & FIELD TRIPS

If you are interested in participating as a volunteer for school events such as sporting activities, class trips, and more, please ensure that you have a valid Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC). VSCs can be submitted to the office within 6 months of receipt and remain valid on file for 5 years.

If you’re unsure about the status of a previous VSC, please contact Mme Schletz in the main office for assistance.

New VSC applications can be submitted on-line through the Guelph Police website, or you can simply search Guelph Vulnerable Sector Check.

POLICE VISITS- October 16, 2024

Officer Grant will be visiting our school on October 16, 2024, to speak with various classes as part of our ongoing commitment to student safety and community engagement. These visits will help students learn important skills and information in a fun and educational way.

Here is the schedule for Officer Grant’s visits:

  • JK/SK: Community Helpers

  • Grade 1: Traffic Safety

  • Grades 2 & 3: Personal Safety

  • Grade 4: Anti-Bullying

Please see the letter that was sent home, which outlines specific curriculum connections by grade. These sessions are designed to provide valuable learning experiences for our students and further enhance their understanding of safety in their daily lives. * Please note that there was a typo in the Grade 2 & 3 letter. The presentation will take place on the 16th, not the 19th.

AWESOME ATTENDANCE & LATES

We wanted to take a moment to give a huge shout-out to all of our amazing students! Over the past few weeks, we’ve heard from many parents that students don’t want to miss school, even for appointments and other commitments.

Every day at school truly matters.  We’re so glad to see how much students are enjoying school, learning, and being part of our school community.

Keep up the great work, and let’s continue to make every day count!

THANKSGIVING

Thanksgiving Day is on Monday October 14th. This time of year reminds us of the importance of family, community, and the connections we share, both at school and at home.

Wishing you and your family a happy and peaceful Thanksgiving weekend filled with joy, love, and togetherness.

CCAT DATES

Please be advised that the CCAT administration dates have changed, as a result of some shipping issues at the board level. The dates will be as follows:

Week of Oct 22-24: CCAT practice tests

Week of Oct 28-30: CCAT Testing Dates

INTERNATIONAL WALK/WHEEL TO SCHOOL MONTH

The Upper Grand District School Board is participating in iWALK/iWHEEL. As part of this month, we are encouraging students and staff to walk, wheel or roll to and from school throughout the month, where able and where it is safe to do so.

If walking, wheeling or rolling to school is not an option due to school location, schools can set aside some time during the month of October to encourage getting outside and being active.

SCHOOL COUNCIL

We had a great turn out to our first school council meeting. Thank you to those who came out and volunteered to fill some of the available positions. We appreciate Judith Little  for volunteering her time to chair the School Council and for Sameeha Salih who will be working as co-chair.

SOCCER SHIN GUARDS

We are looking for a few pairs of extra soccer shin guards for a tournament.  If you have extra guards that you would be willing to donate or lend to the school please contact Mme Beesley at:

michelle.beesley@ugdsb.on.ca.

HALLOWEEN

Our school celebrates Halloween with costume dress-up and/or black and orange. We will ask that parents carefully consider the costumes their children wear to school as they will need to wear them all day. If students choose to wear a costume they should come to school wearing it.   Please have regular clothes available for your child, as they may need to change out of their costumes part way through the day. Class specific activities may be communicated as applicable by your child’s teacher.

If your child(ren) does not participate in Halloween please inform their teacher and there will be alternate activities available.

Costumes:  It is our responsibility to ensure that school community members avoid using identities and cultures as costumes. This includes appropriative costumes/cultural stereotypes (i.e. cultural garments), black/brown face, transphobic costumes, body-shaming and objectifying costumes, and costumes that joke about situations that have caused harm (i.e. COVID pandemic). Such costumes perpetuate stereotypes and can cause harm that can further marginalize and oppress community members.

Also, please note:

  • Accessories are to stay home

  • We ask that students not share candy/drinks/treats; however, students may bring a treat for themselves in their lunch

  • A reminder that costumes should not be scary as we have young students who may be frightened.

  • Please clearly label your child’s costume with their name

  • Costumes should not include masks
