October is International Walk and Wheel to School Month. It’s an annual global celebration that encourages students to travel actively throughout their school day. This October, join the movement by walking or wheeling to and from school. Whether it's for one day, a few days, or all month long!
Why Active School Travel Matters
Choosing active travel to and from school brings many benefits including:
Reduced traffic near school entrances, improving road safety
Lower noise and air pollution from fewer cars
Higher levels of physical activity among children
Enhanced cognitive development and brain health
Improved memory, attention, and academic performance
Active travel to school aligns with the UGDSB’s Multi-Year Plan priorities of Championing Health and Well-Being and Leading Through Sustainability.

Ways Families Can Encourage Active School Travel
Help build active habits at home and in your school community! Try these fun and simple ideas throughout October:
Walking/Wheeling Days: With your children, walk or wheel to school at least one day each week.
Walk-a-Block: Park a block or two from school and walk the rest of the way together.
Weekend Walkabouts: Explore parks, trails, or nearby destinations on foot or by bike.
Let’s work together to create a healthier, safer, and more active school community this October and all year round!
