Dear Parent and Caregiver Community,
We are reaching out with an exciting opportunity to support our Grade 1 learners through a new Reading Volunteer Program. As you know, early reading skills set the foundation for future academic success, and this year we have many young learners who would greatly benefit from a little extra one‑on‑one reading time.
We are hoping to build a team of caring volunteers who can come in to read with students, help them practice high‑frequency words, and support them in building confidence and joy in reading. Even a few minutes a day with a child can make a meaningful difference.
Requirements for Volunteers
To ensure student safety, all volunteers must have:
A Vulnerable Sector Check completed within the last 6 months, or
A Vulnerable Sector Check already on file with us from last year and a signed annual declaration.
If you are unsure whether you have a VSC on file, please reach out and we can confirm for you.
Flexible Scheduling — Any Amount Helps
Our Grade 1 team is very flexible and happy to work around your availability. Whether you can come in once a week for an hour or even 3 hours, we would be grateful for any amount of time you can offer.
By volunteering, you would be joining us as part of a supportive team dedicated to helping our youngest learners thrive. Together, we can create positive reading experiences that build confidence, skill, and excitement for learning.
If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information, please contact me at: andrea.papavasiliou@ugdsb.on.ca or 519-941-3731 ext 223. We would love to have you join us.
Thank you for your continued partnership and for all you do to support our students.
Warmly,
Andrea Papavasiliou, Principal
