Black History Month begins with learning. Across the Upper Grand District School Board, students and staff are building shared understanding by exploring the history, experiences, and contributions of Black communities in Canada, especially stories that have not always been centred in traditional learning.

In classrooms, learning is embedded directly into the curriculum through lessons, discussions, announcements, hallway displays, and Black author studies that highlight Black voices and perspectives. Students are engaging with history through read-alouds, research, videos, and timelines that connect Black history to the Canadian story. In French Immersion and language classes, students are also learning about Francophone Black communities and the global reach of Black culture and history.

Learning is extending beyond school walls as well. Some schools are partnering with local libraries to host weekly Friday Black author read-alouds, creating opportunities for students and families to learn together in community spaces. Through these experiences, students are encouraged to ask questions, deepen their understanding, and reflect on what they already know, and what they are still discovering.
