Hello RCPS Families,
Hope everyone had a warm and relaxing weekend. Please see below information for the week ahead at Rockwood Centennial P.S. as well as some reminders.
Today is Martin Luther King Day, and we read the announcement below on the PA system this morning during the opening exercises. It may be something you want to chat about with your children this evening. It is certainly a timely message. Thanks to Mrs. McDougall for preparing it.
Martin Luther King was an extraordinary hero of Justice. He is perhaps best known for leading the civil rights movement in the United States during a time when people were kept apart because of the colour of their skin and not treated fairly. When he was only 35 years old he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his civil rights work. Four years later while standing on a balcony of a motel he was killed because of this leadership. He is famous for the words from one of his speeches, “I have a dream”.
His dream was that people would live in the truth that everyone is created equal. His dream was that people, those who had suffered and those who had caused suffering would eventually be kind to each other. His dream was that places where injustice had taken place would become places of freedom. His dream was that people would not be judged by the colour of their skin but the content of their character.
Today we need to all think about our character. Are you remembering to be kind? To be truthful? To be compassionate? To show respect? What changes are needed in the choices that you make each day? Let's all work together so that Martin Luther King’s dream - that has not been achieved yet - can be our reality here at Rockwood Centennial.
Private Property
We kindly ask families to remind their children to stay on the sidewalks when walking to and from school. Community members have shared concerns about students cutting across private property, and in some cases these areas may pose safety risks. For everyone’s well‑being, please encourage your children to use the sidewalks at all times. Thank you for helping us keep our students safe.
