Every Day Counts: Attendance Matters

How many days has your child missed? Even if each day absent was for a really good reason, it quickly adds up. Check the top right corner of the Term One Report Card when it comes home on February 19th.

Just 9 days is considered ‘chronically absent’ because that’s 10% of the school year so far. That averages to missing a day of school every two weeks or so. Every child should come every day they can.

Most students in our school have fewer than 8 absences.

You’re building great habits, Bears!

Be On Time, Stay All Day!

Being even a few minutes late can throw off your child’s day. They miss out on the chance to connect with their friends and get settled. The teacher has to repeat instructions each time someone is late, which disrupts everyone.

Arrive at 8:45                           Stay until 3:15

Days absent or late:

  • 0-8 days = on track → keep it up! come to school daily unless you’re too sick

  • 9 days = 10% absent → chronically absent, which negatively impacts learning

  • 19 days = 20% absent → getting back into the habit of daily attendance matters

    more than ever!

  • 28 days = 30% absent → over a month missed - let us support you and your child

    We can help!

For students struggling with attendance, the UGDSB offers many supports including access to Attendance Counsellors, Social Workers, referrals to community agencies and support staff in schools. We can work together to ensure students keep connected and on top of their learning for periods when they have to be absent from school. Families don’t have to do this alone - we’re a team!

When we're together regularly, magic happens!
