No Need to Debate, Go to School. Don’t Be Late!

Posted March 20, 2024

Chronic late attendance can have severe consequences on student wellbeing and achievement. When students regularly are late coming to school, they often miss out on the same class every day. Most teachers have set weekly schedules and usually it is the core subjects that are missed – math and language. Absences for these subjects hinders academic development and this can put a student behind.

Students who are late come into the class after the teacher has started instruction. Often this causes disruption to the flow of the classroom. Some students do not like to be late. Knowing that they must come into a class that has already started can cause severe anxiety. Students report less stressful feelings when they have time in the morning to chat with friends and start the day together with their class. Chronic lateness at school can also lead to bad habits when students reach the work world. Parents want their children to value time and respect punctuality. It starts at school.

Occasional lates happen and are understandable. However, UGDSB is asking you to consider the importance of being on time when you are planning your family’s schedule. Improved punctuality might benefit your child’s mental and academic health.
