Some New Developments

Posted November 10, 2021

We are now able to have clubs at school. The Ministry of Education, Public Health guidelines and the UGDSB have changed to allow groups that cross cohorts to get together safely to enjoy different extracurricular pursuits. We observe distancing and all students will be masked during these activities. At school we have conversed about what that would look like and also discussed possibilities at our last staff meeting. Following are some details.
  • Recyclers. This group is currently operating. Once a week a team collects recycling from all classes. We then ensure the bins are ready for the truck that comes to the school on Fridays.
  • A Rainbow Club (Gender-Sexuality Alliances) where children in grades 5 and 6 may participate once a week, if they wish. This group is currently operating. Here, they have a chance to connect, make crafts and have a safe place to be. They may also have conversations, already having with each other, but with the guidance of caring adults. The staff involved are Ms. Nyman and Mme. Plourde who are accessing the many equity resources available through the school board.
  • Volleyball. Regarding sports, we felt this one could be offered while also allowing us to maintain distancing. Ms. Semanyk will be offering this as an intramural sport in the future.
  • Bus Patrols. This is currently going on. We have a large number of grade 5 and 6 students participating and providing great support for children riding the bus, staff and bus drivers. Later in the Fall, there will be further training on a bus provided by CAA. We are just waiting for the date.
  • Lego. This will be offered to students in two groups; a Primary one and a Junior one. This will allow us to keep the groups smaller and ensure appropriate distancing. Mrs. Bauer will be offering this opportunity.
  • Kindergarten Helpers. This is being offered to Junior students who would like to assist in our two Kindergarten classrooms during snack breaks or getting children ready to go outside. This becomes very important as we approach the next season.
  • Makerspace. This will be offered in the Library Learning Commons as we move forward. It gives children a chance to create and build, using the resources we have on hand. Mr. Tribe will be coordinating that activity.
  • Library Helpers. This will be offered to Junior students to help shelve the books and maintain a neat Library Learning Commons. This is a very popular space and children enjoy signing out books and reading in general.
There are many more possibilities in the works and I will let you know about them as they become available. It is exciting as we begin our slow and careful return to a variety of activities being offered at the school.
