GRADE 8 COURSE SELECTION

January brings Course selection for our Grade 8 students as we plan and prepare to help them transition to their “next chapter”. This is both a stressful and exciting time for students.

Please ensure you have completed the HighSchool destination survey and advise your child’s homeroom teacher of any changes: JMC Student Secondary School Destination Survey 2023-24

Please see the attached slide show presentation that includes a variety of information related to grade 8 transition to high school and is targeted towards parents and caregivers. Parent/Caregiver Guide to support Student Transition from 8-9

All course selection is done online through my Blueprint, which can be located on the UGDSB Student Landing Page.

Lost And Found

Lost and Found

When you are in the school, please make a point of checking out our lost and found which is located in the front foyer of the school.

Classroom teachers take their students to retrieve items on a regular basis.

At the end of the month, items are donated to non-profit organizations (Hope House, Women’s crisis center). M. Ellis

CYC Corner

This month’s theme in Wellness Works is Coping with Stress.

The one common thing we all share and experience in life is stress. As a parent, one of the most powerful ways you can teach your child about understanding and coping with stress, is to model how you cope with stress yourself.  Try to stay calm under pressure, but don’t be afraid to tell and show your child how you handle stress now and again. For example, it’s helpful to say, “I am going to take a walk and relax for a bit,” or “I am feeling stressed, so I am going to do my slow breathing now to calm down.” When you problem-solve out loud, your child will start to pick up on how you handle stress and can practice it, too. It also gives them permission to feel their own stress.

Here are some healthy ways you can deal with stress:

  • Take care of yourself (exercise, breathing techniques, etc)
  • Take care of your body (eating and sleeping are key)
  • Make time to unwind (read a book, take a walk, stop and be mindful of things around you etc)
  • Talk to others (sharing your feelings with friends and family is very therapeutic)
  • Focus on positivity and gratitude (name one thing daily that you are grateful for or something that was positive in your day)

“Stress acts as an accelerator: it will push you either forward and or   backwards,  but you choose which direction.”
