The CYC Corner

Upcoming Presentations:  Lisa Longtin, our Child and Youth Counsellor will be presenting the Child Abuse Prevention Program. Students in grades 7 will participate in the Red Cross program entitled “It’s Not Your Fault”. This will take place in the month of April. A message will be sent home with more information before the presentation occurs.

This month’s theme in Wellness Works is Gratitude. Gratitude helps people refocus on what they have instead of what they lack.

Gratitude is:

  • The quality of being thankful
  • An acknowledgement of goodness
  • Readiness to show appreciation and return gratitude
  • Recognizing sources of goodness outside of ourselves and how they contribute to our lives

Why Gratitude?

  • Gratitude can have the greatest impact when facing difficulties
  • By making a deliberate effort to show gratitude (in good times and bad times) we can help build resilience
  • Gratitude can be a helpful habit

Strategies that we as parents, can help foster gratitude in our children are:

  • Showing kindness to others
  • Modeling gratitude in our own lives by saying thank you etc
  • Asking gratitude focused questions (“What is something you own that you are grateful for? Why?” etc)
  • Sharing what you are grateful with your kids at bed or dinner time

Teaching gratitude to our children leads to many desired outcomes in life, including greater success in achieving goals, better physical health, better coping strategies, higher feeling of self-worth, and a greater sense of purpose.

“It is not happiness that makes us grateful.  It’s gratefulness that makes us happy.”   David Steindl-Rast
