The Buzz: What I'd Like You to Know This Autism Awareness Month | The Inclusion Solution

Every April is World Autism Month, beginning with the United Nations-sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day on April 2. This year marks the 17th annual World Autism Awareness Day.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is classified as a lifelong neurodevelopmental disability in the DSM-5 (diagnostic manual). The diagnosis refers to individuals who meet a specific set of diagnostic criteria, in social communication and restrictive/repetitive behaviors. Autism is a condition that makes it difficult for an individual to communicate in one way or another.  Many people with autism have the same learning potential as others around them, but this is hidden by their difficulty with communication.

Sometimes students with autism prefer structure and predictability in their daily routines. We can support people with autism by helping them to communicate, and by never underestimating their abilities.
