GUELPH, Ontario – The Upper Grand’s Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) is hosting two upcoming workshops that will focus on effective and responsible use of social media.

PIC’s fall event, “Social Media Fitness,” will take place over two nights, on Nov. 7 in Guelph and Nov. 8 in Orangeville. The workshops are open to all UGDSB parents and guardians.

Social Media Fitness inspires parents to develop clarity, confidence and new skills to support themselves and their families in the world of Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook and more.

Parents are invited to attend and learn about topics including social media and mental health, how students are evaluated online, building a sustainable reputation, daily habits (important vs urgent), achieving a balance and reducing screen time, and increasing online confidence and skills.

Both sessions will feature presentations by special guests Chris Vollum and Alyson Schafer followed by a question period.

Vollum is a widely-recognized educator on numerous social media platforms. With 11 years of experience speaking to students, employees and parents, Vollum inspires people to take what they’re doing online and “transform it from average to awesome through the lens of gratitude, integrity, clarity and intention.”

Schafer is a family counsellor, author and internationally acclaimed parenting expert. She “promotes a firm but friendly ‘democratic parenting’ style and offers practical solutions backed by extensive research.”

The workshops are free to attend, but registration is required.
