Weekly Update

Office HalloweenDear King George Families,

We had a wonderful day yesterday.  It was so lovely to have some fun and lightness and to do something that feels normal.  I think it gave everyone a lift – me for sure.  Please continue to send in photos of your child in costume, black & orange or fancy dress so I may add them to a slideshow for the website.  This is an invitation for in-person and remote King George families.  I hope to post the little movie by Monday.

The minutes from the October School Council meeting have been posted.  I encourage you to have a look if you weren’t able to attend that meeting.  The November meeting will take place on November 10th at 6:30 pm.  A link to the Google Meet will be posted on the website just prior to the meeting.

This week is Treaties Recognition Week and classes will be exploring this topic.  If you are interested, our school is within the Between the Lakes Purchase Treaty 3 area, dating from 1792.  Here is a link to a fascinating interactive map that shows all the Treaty Lands in Ontario.  Here is our board’s land acknowledgement:

From the Anishinaabe to the Haudenosaunee and the Métis, these treaty lands are steeped in rich Indigenous history and modern traditions. As a community, we have the responsibility to honour and respect the four directions, land, waters, plants, animals and ancestors. Today, this area is home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island. We acknowledge the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation of the Anishinaabek Peoples, on whose ancestral and treaty lands we teach, learn and live.

Our Public Health Nurse, Lindsay, was here this week for a meeting and check-in.  She watched our students outside at recess and talked with us about protocols we have in place and she was impressed.  We are working very hard to keep everyone safe here and it seems we are doing a good job!  Please continue to do the COVID screening every day with your child before they head out the door.  If the direction is to stay home from school, then follow the steps on the form attached below to find out what you must do next.  Please remember that any ONE of these symptoms means your child must get a COVID-19 test and remain home in isolation until there is a negative result:  fever and/or chills, cough or barking cough (croup), shortness of breath, decrease or loss of taste or smell.

I would like to remind everyone that it is the policy of the Upper Grand District School Board to support the use of video surveillance cameras.  Video surveillance can promote a secure environment while upholding the essential and legislated rights of privacy of individuals.  Video surveillance is only one means by which the board will ensure a safe and secure learning environment.  The purpose of video surveillance is to serve the security needs of the Board and is not intended to infringe on anyone’s right to privacy.  Please see UGDSB Policy #203 for more information.

I hope you have a fun and safe Halloween if your family participates in that event, and I wish you a wonderful weekend.  The theme for the board’s Umbrella Project which is focused on supporting mental health is gratitude this month, and I am extremely grateful for an extra hour of sleep this weekend!

Happy November!

With warm regards,

Jane Bibby, Principal
